The disgusting and barbaric Yulin Dog Meat Festival, a controversial event characterized by inhumane treatment of dogs (and cats), commences today in China and will continue for ten days. An estimated 10,000 dogs are anticipated to be consumed during this period. While canine consumption has been a longstanding practice in parts of China, often attributed to folklore associating it with summer health and prosperity (😡), the festival itself is a relatively recent phenomenon, originating in 2009.
The festival is currently subject to significant negative media attention both domestically and internationally. Reports from activists indicate inhumane animal slaughter methods, including public beatings, and allege that hygiene standards at the festival violate current Chinese regulations. Concerns have been raised regarding the transportation of dogs from across China in overcrowded conditions, with recorded evidence suggesting some animals were wearing collars and were stolen pets.
In South Korea, the commercial dog meat trade, encompassing breeding, slaughter, distribution, and sale, is prohibited, effective 2027 (why the delayed implementation!). Violators face penalties, including up to three years’ imprisonment for dog slaughter. China should similarly enact a comprehensive ban on this inhumane practice, particularly given that younger generations increasingly favor pet ownership over dog meat consumption. Organizations like Harbin SHS Animal Rescue bravely document and try to disrupt the annual festival, often facing obstruction from authorities (see attached video).
The Harbin SHS Animal Rescue team are currently operating at the festival under close observation by Chinese authorities, who are actively attempting to obstruct video documentation. I commend the team’s dedication and urge all members to prioritize their safety. Their bravery will ultimately serve to expose the inhumane nature of the dog meat trade, and to hold China accountable.
If you wish to donate to their cause please visit Harbin SHS Animal Rescue
...and don’t forget the Dog Meat Trade Dachshund Rescue , a charity particularly close to my heart. They work alongside Harbin Dog Rescue. DMT save numerous dogs destined for slaughterhouses, kill shelters, and illegal breeding facilities, and rehome them in loving UK homes.
I sincerely hope that I won't need to publish a similar post next year, and I trust that this barbaric festival will be permanently closed down once and for all.
