Annual FLU vaccinations
In line with Government and RCVS recommendations we will not be doing annual flu vaccinations for the next three weeks as a minimum.
We will e-mail you all when we are able to resume this service.
If this results in your horse going out of date we will be running a vaccination amnesty to help improve this situation when things get back to normal, however we are also hopeful that following urgent discussions, the British Equine Veterinary Association is having with equine sports regulators, there will be a one off extension to the usual 365 day rule.
There is no need to do any extra six monthly boosters at present as all competitions are now cancelled.
Due to the 'lock down' measures that are in place there is almost no movement of horses. As such experts are of the view that a delay in the annual influenza booster will have little to no impact on equine welfare for the next three weeks.
We would urge all clients to follow the governments instructions and to where possible stay safe and stay at home.
We will continue to provide an essential only service so don't worry about emergency care for sick and injured horses. If you have any welfare concerns please do not hesitate to get in touch - we are here for you and will give you every support we can.

How to avoid the dreaded IMPACTION COLIC:

As cold conditions are set to move in, here are some tips on how to try and avoid your horse getting impaction colic:

❄️ In this freezing cold weather horses tend to drink less. Salt licks and apples in buckets can encourage drinking.

❄️Check troughs regularly. If there is any ice, break AND remove it (bring a fork or scoop - NOT a job for bare hands!)

❄️Check your horse is passing their normal number of droppings and consistency...not too hard or dry

❄️If you're feeding hard feed, add extra water...preferably warm!

❄️Avoid prolonged periods of stabling on straw bedding, to prevent your horse from eating it

If you have any worries that they are not producing enough droppings, then please contact your vet!

One of the most common winter time health problems in equines is colic. Colic is basically gut pain, and can be very distressing for both horse and…

As temperatures have recently dropped quite dramatically we would now recommend holding off on any worm egg counts until the grass starts growing again in the Spring. Any counts done during the Winter months would not give a true representation of worm burden. Please call us on: 01361 889106 if you have any questions.

Targeted worming is essential to reduce the incidence of resistance to wormers and involves only treating your horse when required based on faecal worm egg
counts. Faecal worm egg counts should be done every 3- 6 months depending on the horse and its environment.
Tapeworms and encysted cyathostomins (red worms) are difficult to assess based on a faecal worm egg count and therefore treatment of ‘at risk’ patients may be required and should be based on advice by your veterinary surgeon.
If your vet thinks your horse is at risk they may recommend treatment in Autumn but not all horses will require this treatment
