Congratulations to all of our Puppy Academy Level 1 Dogs who graduated tonight and absolutely smashed it!

We had 9 dogs in total training on Tuesdays over the last 6 weeks: Bonnie, Bailie, Milo, Roxy, Brodie, Clint, Winnie, Grimli and Frankie🐾

These pups have worked hard and learnt lots of new skills, with their amazing owners learning how to train and handle like pros🙌

Yesterday we tried something new👀 (and we absolutely loved it!)

With an early start, we headed down to The Working Retriever Club of Ireland's working test in Co Monaghan after and Koda invited us along to join them. We primarily came to watch the amazing handlers and experienced dogs do their thing, but threw our hat in the ring and I gave the Prelim Test a shot with Betsy and Ola! I was so proud of how well these girls coped in such a new environment, and it was great to get the opportunity to put their training to the test amongst the professionals.

For us, Gundog training has always just been for fun and to give my girls the breed specific fulfilment they love and deserve- so this is a totally new world to us. I love the transferable skills it teaches my dogs: steadiness, calmness, focus and drive. We absolutely didn't expect to come back with anything, but I was so proud of Betsy for placing second in the Prelim test, working alongside some cracking dogs! 🙌 And Ola scored well too, coming in 6th and more importantly managing to contain her excitement throughout the test and really showed her maturity developing♥️

We had a fantastic day, and so grateful to everyone for making us feel welcome and sharing lots of advice and support along the way. 🙏

Introducing Canine Ability Assistance Dogs — the next big step in the journey for Canine Ability Dog Training!

An Assistance Dog is a highly trained canine that mitigates disability for the individual they work for. Over the past few years, I’ve had the privilege of supporting owners who are training their own Assistance Dogs- watching them learn together, progress and thrive in their new partnerships has been incredible! At Canine Ability, my goal has always been to make life-changing Assistance Dogs more accessible to those who need them- and this new project (which I have been keeping quiet for a few months🤫) aims to add another route to access these special dogs.

So Canine Ability Assistance Dogs has some new recruits: two lively little Labrador pups with plans for a big future ahead🤞 (Proper introductions to follow). These are pups I will train myself to one day mitigate disability for someone who truly needs them. They'll be staying with me during the early and intensive stages of training, before being thoughtfully matched with the right families further down the line.

With the pitter-patter of tiny paws well and truly invading my house, I have my work cut out for me and lots and lots of training ahead! 🌟We welcome 5 new pups this week for their Level 1 Puppy Academy course at Jollyes Bangor - The Pet People 🌟

Bella, Dash, Daisy, Skye and Willow did amazing and flew through week 1 of training! We started with communication and marker training- using luring and basic position changes (sit, down, stand and spins) to teach the pups how to earn their reinforcement, and the owners how to improve their handling skills. We worked on positive reinforcement and how to build food motivation, talked puppy routines and how to prevent unwanted behaviours🐾

Next week we start with our loose lead walking, play motivation and toy drive 🥎

Fancy trying out some search and rescue training with your dog? This class is suitable for complete beginners!🐾

🌟6 week course- begins SUNDAY 1ST FEBRUARY 9AM

Live Airscenting is a Search and Rescue style of training where we will be training your dog to search, find people and indicate (tell you about it) while working off the lead! Search and Rescue Dog Betsy will show you the ropes along the way🐕‍🦺

This training is the perfect combination of using your dog's brain (and those 300 million scent receptors in your dog's nose) to mentally tire them out, and burn off all of that excess physical energy so you come home with a very happy and relaxed dog!

It is also an excellent way of improving your dogs recall from distractions, giving them a job to focus on offlead.

Who is this suitable for?
🌟Dogs of any age or breed are welcome
🌟Dogs with good recall off-lead (we can use dropped lines and grab handles if we are in an area with more distractions, but a baseline of good recall is important)
🌟No experience searching required at all! We will begin the training from scratch and at your dogs pace (although also open to more experienced dogs and handlers)
🌟 Great for dogs who need a little confidence building around new people and new environments- teaches them that approaching people calmly is fun and not scary!

📍Classes take place outdoors, and location changes each week- BANGOR /ARDS /ARDS PENINSULA
🕔 SUNDAYS AT 9AM-11AM Beginning 1st February (exact dates on the booking link)

Did you know it takes around 2-3 years for your new puppy to mature into an adult dog? And training a puppy to fit into your life takes a lot of hard work, patience and plenty of time- it doesn't all happen in just 6 weeks! So we've changed the structure of our puppy classes to better support you and your best friend as they grow and develop through adolescence and into adult dogs.

🌟Introducing Canine Ability Puppy Academy: Level 1 and Level 2🌟

1️⃣Level 1 Puppy Academy is the starting point for all pups, laying strong foundations and introducing all of the key behaviors from day 1. We look at recall and lead work, settling and sleep, play and impulse control, greetings and socialisation. We train at your puppies pace and adapt it to each family's individual lifestyle!

2️⃣Level 2 takes each of these skills to the next level by adding real world distractions and increasing difficulty, as well as introducing new skills along the way.This is the perfect refresher to reinforce training foundations while your puppy begins to push the boundaries as they move into adolescence!
