It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Shaun, our beloved 5-year-old South American tapir.
Shaun passed away on Sunday 17 August, when he was humanely euthanised due to his declining condition.
In recent months, Shaun had been experiencing ongoing issues with colic that were impacting his quality of life. Despite the expertise of our veterinary staff and all possible efforts, Shaun’s condition sadly deteriorated, and the compassionate decision was made to euthanise him on welfare grounds. Shaun was born here at Newquay Zoo on 15 August 2020 and was a cherished member of our South American enclosure family. He was popular on social media and became something of a celebrity with visitors.
Born to parents Al Capone and Emily (who sadly passed away in 2022), Shaun was mentored by his devoted father throughout his life, allowing him to develop the gentle, curious personality that made him so special.
One of his keepers, Tracey Twomey, shared her thoughts:
“From the moment he was born he stole everyone’s hearts. Knowing that Shaun had been poorly for a while hasn’t made this any easier at all, but I know we can take comfort that he had the best life possible with us and he knew how loved he was all the time including in his final moments.”
His dad will continue to be closely monitored by his dedicated keepers.
We understand that many visitors formed special connections with Shaun over the years, and his passing will be deeply felt. We welcome messages of condolence, which can be shared with Shaun’s keeper team, who knew him best.
