So well said. Never ever use unkind methods to train your dog. They’re based on disproven theory, are unkind and potentially dangerous for dogs and humans.

Channel 4’s Dogs Behaviour Badly with Graeme Hall

In the opening driving shots the self proclaimed ‘dog father’ insists that people think he is a maverick. A maverick is someone who is unorthodox in their field - unorthodox meaning untraditional. To the contrary,Graeme Hall is actually quite the opposite of a maverick - instead approaching behaviour science from an incredibly traditional place: pre science-based training and from a time when we didn't have the ability to read dogs or the compassion to give them choices.

Hall’s wisdom is based on the idea that dogs, like wolves, are pack animals and that they have a dominance hierarchy structure, much like wolves except that people are in that structure as well. As such Hall continually explains problems by suggested the owner needs to be Top Dog. David Mech’s book, The Wolf: Ecology and Behavior of an Endangered Species was the book, in the 80s, that started this. In the 90s thankfully he realised he made a mistake. As technology and advancements in our own ideas allowed us to study dogs more scientifically Mech himself changed his mind. He corrected these ideas in 1999 in his paper Alpha Status, Dominance, and Division of Labor in Wolf Packs. We moved on from this and changed our ideas - realising that dogs are cooperative animals who desire for peace with the humans who they depend upon,

And it isn't just the wisdom that is a step back in time. Poor ignorant wisdom from the 80’s is actually something I can forgive - the thing that I found most disturbing about Dog’s Behaving Badly was the methods. The methods I cannot forgive.

OK - so punishment works. It is one of those things that as trainers who use Least Intrusive minimally aversive methods, don't rush out to tell people. But it does. Often checking and shouting at dogs actually suppresses behaviour far quicker that it would take us to train it out. Ill be honest, Addy the poodle who, on the show, was fearful towards the male in the house - his behaviour would have taken a few weeks at the least, for me to train out. Hall did it in 40 minutes - a quick ‘fix’ indeed. However, what he did in 40 minutes was to identify an animal as scared and then frighten it into a state of learnt helplessness. Then bully the dog for looking at the man he was frightened of. And give the man the confidence to shout at the dog - and his girlfriend - for trying to reassure the dog, for trying to warn the man. If the top dog meme was correct then Addy will be killing the boyfriend in his sleep tonight, more than likely though the biting will return at an ill timed gathering or party and someone other than the boyfriend will suffer the damage from a dog who has been punished out of warning; a dog with no stable relationships from which to seek comfort.

And that got me thinking: surely what he is doing is illegal? I mean it wasn't in Barbara Woodhouse’s day - but surely it is now? To my knowledge the Animal Welfare Act 2006 Section 4(1) under prevention of harm states unnecessary suffering is when a person (in this case Hall) causes an animal to suffer - knowingly or having reasonably to have known. You only have to look at the conformation of a Great Dane to know that continued short, sharp yanks to his head via a head collar will be putting pressure on his thyroid gland and also causing tissue damage. This is, without a doubt, suffering and and harm surely? And surely as one of the “UK’s top dog experts” he has reasonably to have known this would cause this damage. And that isn't even considering the clear psychological welfare issues.

Really - thats the thing about this show that has people (myself included) shouting at the TV and up in arms once again. Its not a funny ‘love to hate him’ type affair with irritating celebrities living and arguing about cleaning in the big brother house. This show has wide implications. It has taken a decade of careful scientific studies and newspapers covering these studies to finally put the likes of confusing pseudo science to bed. When we did Super Dog to rescue Dog it felt exciting to finally be TV training using methods that don't upset the dog - and have channel 4 interested and invested in taking the time. With our knowledge of where dogs stands cognitively and emotionally (yes, they are actually a bit like us - see Gregory Berns FMRI scans and his other studies about love and the canine brain) people are finally realising that training - is just teaching. And that it is about trust and enjoyment and engagement. What Hall is doing is muddying those waters for owners - suggesting dogs are like us when it comes to needing consequence but not like us when it comes to feelings of trust or love. And he fails to recognise that dogs don't have a moral compass. His TED video is frustratingly misquoting science with a poor understanding of basic learning theory. Annoyingly this will not put owners off listening to this fool whose been given a platform. I'm sure we have months of him explaining how it's still ok to bully and shout and check dogs on a lead because it will produce a quick fix. It will cause a huge spike in ignorance-based cruelty and reduce the welfare of many, many dogs in this country. What is most confusing is that the researchers for this show and the Series Producers too decided this was OK - to ignore the science. Perhaps they were brainwashed into believing it was just another point of view or that people would love to hate it and it would be popular via controversy. What they failed to recognise was that this sort of high profile cruelty won’t just effect the poor, poor dogs who have been physically hurt on TV and who have also had their stability, trusted relationships and comfort pulled out from under the, - but this will also have a knock on effect to dog owners nationwide. Winter is coming.

Make sure you’re not ignorant like Greame https://caninescience.online

Signed up and ready to learn the up to date science, and practical application of scent work for dogs, over the next 6 months. There’s plenty of evidence already to show how it can help build confidence, and with the winter months ahead, great for rainy days and dark nights - a great mental workout for those dogs with lots of energy.

Good information here. Always try to use natural treats and chews, and leave the rawhide on the shelf.

❌ PLEASE LEAVE THEM IN THE SHOPS ❌

The vast majority of these rawhide products and treats come from China.

Their journey starts with the hides being soaked in a toxic sodium sulphide to remove the hair and fat. More chemicals are used in order to split the hide into layers which is then washed with hydrogen peroxide to give the white "pure" look and remove the rancid smell.
Now comes the pretty festive colours and the glue to form cute shapes.

They regularly cause intestinal blockages and choking. The chews go slippery when wet and are near impossible to get hold of to save a choking dog.

Please be safe with your dogs!

This is so so true. There are many good trainers around, but also plenty of bad ones too. If you hear phrases like show the dog who’s in charge, or tools like choke chains, or lead corrections are suggested, run a mile. Your dog’s issues can be addressed using kind and more effective methods - they may take a little longer initially, than the instant fixes shown by old fashioned methods, but you and your dog will benefit.

Cesar Millan's training method has taken dog awareness backwards in time, decades back in fact. This is bad news for dog guardians but even worse news for dogs.

Let’s take a look at why Cesar’s dog training method should never, ever influence how you treat your own best friend.

Lack of Education

Because of the methods he uses we can tell that Cesar has no formal dog qualifications. Not a certificate nor any proof of scientific study. Following this advice is akin to taking your kids to the man down the road, when they are seriously ill, for no reason other than the man down the road was once seriously ill too.

Study and Continuation of Professional Development is crucial for professionals in any field, with dogs it’s extra important because we are living in times where we are learning so much about them. We must also educate ourselves because the dog training industry is self-regulated, so not only is it a matter of skill but also personal standards. Working as an interpreter between people and dogs is an important job – we should at least be educated in canine communication and adhere to it., otherwise we a deceiving both dogs and their people.

He Ignores (Or Isn’t Aware Of) How Dogs Feel.

He might ignore how dogs feel, or he might just not care, but the availability of calming signal awareness is vast nowadays. Yet when a dog says “I’m scared – leave me alone” Cesar carries on muscling in and stressing the dog further, it seems to be what his brand is based on. So we have to ask, is he simply protecting his brand or does he just not know any better? Wouldn’t you love to know?

This Method is WAY Too Physical.

How often have you seen this guy push a dog over as part of the method he uses? Many times I expect, I certainly have. He pokes, pushes, shoves and even kicks dogs. If we saw a teacher doing that to confused kids there would be a national outcry, yet we put the exact same act on television as a suitable way to train confused dogs. Dogs are not physical animals, they are visual and scent communicators. They talk to each other via looks, body language and intricate visual signals. If dogs touch each other it’s by using consent and requests or for reasons of conflict. No-one wants to be touched without giving consent, I don’t, I expect you don’t and our dogs certainly don’t.

The Method Is Scientifically REJECTED.

Once long ago, a group of unrelated wolves were pushed together and fenced in. They were confused, squabbled and fought because they had nowhere else to go (a bit like big brother with less participant choice). A group of scientists interpreted their behaviour as the Alpha theory (that the Cesar Millan method is based on). A few years later the theory was revoked because more was learned about how wolves actually live. The theory is completely rejected by scientists today, because wolves live in a respectful family group of parents and, young and sometimes extended family.

Dogs Are Not Wolves.

Dogs and wolves parted ways many moons ago - thousands of years. They have a common ancestor yet when we look at the domestic dog of today he is just that, an animal that has evolved to live with people. When we look at wolves, they are animals that have evolved to be suspicious of people – and rightly so as we seem to continually persecute the poor things – we can’t logically associate dogs with wolves in any other way than that common ancestor long, long ago. Just as we are related to apes, dogs are related to wolves – yet we are both domestic animals now, with domestic habits and unique personalities.

Wolves Don’t Fight for “Alpha Position” Anyway.

When left alone, wolves live as family groups. The parents lead and the youngsters follow and learn. They are highly bonded and actual aggression, or even serious challenge, is a huge issue which rarely (if ever) occurs.
When we look at how wolves live naturally, as a happy family, we can’t help but see how a theory created on a group of strangers pushed together is highly flawed and has been repeatedly rejected by more recent findings and scientific awareness.

The Method Uses Nasty Tools.

Prong collars, electric shocks, check chains and even his booted feet or rigid fingers. Each are part of the methodical toolkit. When we take into account the fact that most dog behaviour problems are based in fear, insecurity or confusion there is absolutely no way that we can seriously believe that any of the above tools can help.

Dogs are Co-Operators.

We only need to look at books such as The Genius of Dogs by Brian Hare and Vanessa Woods, or In Defence of Dogs by John Bradshaw to really see how co-operative our dogs are. We actually only need to look at our dogs with educated eyes. The problems that, as a species, humans have with their dogs are not based on canine rebellion that’s for sure. The things we deem “behaviour problems” are based on poor or even non-existent (past or present) human to dog communication, dog illness, misunderstanding or canine vulnerability.

Dogs Are Individuals.

Dogs have personality and each is different. Cesar’s method treats them all the same, like all dogs have one mind-set and simply want to take over the home (and in fact the world). Anyone that has ever lived with a dog knows that each has a personality and this fact alone blows this brand to smithereens.

The Dog’s Message is Lost In Translation.

When Cesar tells us (from our TV screens) that we must dominate our dogs, he is taking us further away from proper communication, not closer to it. It might look successful on TV but the dog often has a serious breakdown afterwards.

In actual fact, if you look through educated eyes, the dog usually has a serious breakdown on the program too (Which is claimed to be submission on the dog’s part) and in reality is emotional shutdown due to a huge amount of stress hormone flooding the body and brain of the animal. The same hormone shuts off the digestive and immune system whilst activating the fight, flight or freeze reaction.

So folks, I could go on all day about this. I don’t have time though. I hope I have given you enough to go on just now and that you never visit Nat Geo again. For your dog’s sake and your own.

Take a look at a far better approach, from people like Sophia Yin, Sarah Fisher and Canine Principles (sorry couldn’t resist that shameless plug). The information is all out there, most is free and by embracing positive communication your relationship with your dog will be better than it has ever been. If you are having problems with understanding your dog, then learn how to do it properly. You will find that your best friend may be feeling very different to how you thought.

"Alpha dog" is a dated and pointless term that doesn't apply scientifically, psychologically or physically to man's best friend. So, If a dog trainer says you " need to be alpha" it's time to leave.

Alpha dog trainers can cause aggression, injury and fear that the dog cannot get over. The treatment is triggered by a belief that dogs want to rule the home and everyone in it and it's also based on a disproven scientific theory. An idea that the dog needs to be bossed or be the boss is far too simplistic in comparison to the complex creature that is the domestic dog in our lives today.

When we assume that all dogs are simply desperate to take the role of leader we disallow all of the most recent scientific findings which provide proof that dogs have individual personalities and problem solving capacity well beyond that which we first thought.

Followers of the alpha method also assume that dogs are incapable of any quality emotional response or feeling, when kind experimentation over the last few years is showing that dogs do indeed possess an emotional capacity, perhaps not one identical to that of humans but a complex emotional capacity nonetheless.

If we teach that the dog is trying to take over the home and pass that belief across to dog owners they end up in a very awkward position, believing that they must take control of the dog in their home. Some trainers even state that the dog owner must use any ‘necessary’ force and that they are doing the dog a favour. Methods can include punishment or threatening tools, in an attempt to show the dog guardian how to regain their own status.

It's a double betrayal, to dogs and the people that love them.

When dogs are trained in the way that stems from this approach they are usually completely confused, scared and often go into an emotional shutdown. Which may be triumphantly claim as “submission resulting from the dog finally understanding their place". In reality the emotional shutdown is a manifestation of learned helplessness where the dog feels that he has no control over the treatment that he is receiving so just gives up and shuts down his emotions in order to wait the treatment out, in the hope that it goes away.

When in actual fact, it's time the alpha dog trainer went away. There's no place for cruel treatment based on opinion, particularly when we have science acknowledging how damaging that treatment is.
