With plenty of lambs on the ground - the next thing we are all waiting for is.... the worms!
Nematodirus forescast available on SCOPS suggests that the Isle of Wight has missed the Spring risk period for this parasite - but it's worth keeping an eye on this anyway

https://www.scops.org.uk/forecasts/nematodirus-forecast/

There's also a blowfly risk forecast on NADIS - link below
https://alerts.nadis.org.uk/

Please feel free to contact us to talk through a plan for your animals

The Blowfly watch in conjunction with Elanco predicts the emergence of blowflies based on Met Office Data. This can help to predict risk of clinical cases and help treatment timings.

Huge thank you to Alan and Harold George for hosting last night's meeting - and thanks to the 47 people who joined us - great to see so many people!
We learnt (among other things)
Dairy x calves will finish on a largely forage based diet
Healthy calves and attention to detail make this simple system work
The Flemming family used to own much of East Wight and have a monument above Coppid Hall that comemorates the East Wighters lost in the 1st and 2nd World wars.
We also learnt, on our trip up to the monument, that farmers are a super fit bunch (even the ones who are no longer 18)
Look forward the next one... we will keep you posted

Great reminder from Black Sheep Farm Health that there's funding to support testing and if necessary, eradication of BVD. Testing annually is already mandatory if you're farm assured. We've been out and about blood testing youngstock before turnout this month. Please give us a call to talk through how the funding works and book a visit

We've already done a large portion of the BVD check tests due this spring- make sure yours is done before turn out!

BVD is recognised as one of the most economically important diseases of cattle; it causes immunosuppression thus increasing prevalence of other diseases, in addition to reproductive problems such as infertility, abortion and birth defects.

The BVD check test requires five animals aged 9-18 months from each management group to be blood sampled for BVD antibody.

The Animal Health & Welfare Pathway (AHWP) for cattle is focused on BVD control, and any keeper with 11 or more cattle is eligible to apply for the funding towards their BVD check test & BVD biosecurity review:

• £905 for BVD –ve herds

• £1601 for BVD +ve herds

This funding can be claimed for multiple herds on one farm, ie autumns and springs. Please speak to Emili or Claire if you need help applying for pathway funding.
