Vaccination choice and titre testing
My Eurasier, Hiro, received a single DHP vaccination at 10 weeks of age, alongside nosodes, and subsequently underwent antibody titre testing instead of receiving a routine 1-year booster. Given the Eurasier breed’s known predisposition to autoimmune disease, we aimed to avoid unnecessary repeat vaccination while still ensuring adequate protection.
Maternal antibodies, particularly those against canine parvovirus, can persist for longer in some puppies and may interfere with early vaccination. However, manufacturer guidance (specifically Nobivac) indicates that in the majority of dogs, a DHP vaccination administered at 10 weeks of age or older is sufficient to induce protective immunity.
With this in mind, and in accordance with WSAVA vaccination guidelines, our vet - fully aware of the breed context - agreed to assess immunity via antibody titre testing rather than automatically administering a 1-year booster.
The VacciCheck results confirmed protective IgG antibody levels against canine parvovirus, distemper, and infectious canine hepatitis, demonstrating that Hiro mounted an effective and lasting immune response from his single vaccination.
This represents an individualised, risk-based approach to vaccination, rather than a blanket revaccination protocol, and is not anti-vaccination.
Dragon Lab Animal Health VacciCheck titre service is great for those whose vet may not stock this test 👌🏾
