Meet handsome Wolfie πŸ±πŸ’™

Poor Wolfie arrived at DWR after sustaining fractures to all four of the metatarsal bones in his right hind leg.

As the injury happened while Wolfie was outside, the exact cause of the trauma remains unknown. What we do know is that he had a significant injury that required specialist care.

Wolfie was treated by our brilliant Orthopaedic team, his surgery was led by our amazing Nicola Mansbridge, who carefully assessed his fractures and planned the best course of treatment to get him back on his paws. 🐾

Swipe to see Wolfie’s pre-operative radiographs alongside those taken 7 weeks after surgery. The follow-up images show the fracture repair in place and, most importantly, the bones healing nicely. ❀️🩻

And the best news? Wolfie is doing brilliantly! His owners told us: "Wolfie is doing brilliantly and it’s like the injury never happened. He is back out in the garden living his best life!"

They also added: "Thank you so much for looking after him and putting him back together again." ❀️

We’re delighted to hear Wolfie is back to enjoying his garden and living his best life. What a little fighter! πŸΎπŸ’™

🐱 Our passion for cats extends far beyond the consulting room.

As we've been celebrating feline health and supporting the campaign, it's the perfect time to reflect on how our team is helping shape the future of feline medicine through research and innovation.

We're incredibly proud of our Surgery team and their contributions to advancing care for cats with complex urinary conditions.

πŸ“– Just last week, we celebrated the publication of a paper in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery (JFMS), co-authored by our Head of Surgery, Rachal Hattersley, alongside one of our former interns: 'Evaluation of the incidence of haematuria following the placement of subcutaneous ureteral bypass devices in 18 cats (2016–2022)'

🌍 And at the World Feline Congress 2026 earlier this year, Nicola Mansbridge presented the team's research on: 'Assessment of quality of life in cats with subcutaneous ureteral bypass systems.'

It's fantastic to see the expertise of the DWR team recognised on an international stage. By sharing research and clinical experience, we're helping to improve the understanding, treatment and long-term care of cats requiring innovative procedures such as Subcutaneous Ureteral Bypass (SUB) systems.

Research, collaboration and continual learning are all part of our commitment to providing the very best specialist care for every feline patient.

Congratulations to Rachal, Nicola, our former intern, and the entire Surgery team on these outstanding achievements - we're incredibly proud of you all! πŸ‘πŸΎ

🐱 At DWR, our love for cats doesn't stop with International Cat Day! 🐾

Following on from International Cat Day on Saturday, we're proud to support the campaign - encouraging cat owners, caregivers and veterinary professionals to put cats unique needs first.

At , we're dedicated to providing the very best clinical expertise and compassionate care for every feline patient. That's why we're proud to hold Gold-Level Cat Friendly Clinic (CFC) accreditation from the International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM).

Being a CFC means creating an environment that helps reduce stress from the moment your cat arrives. At DWR, this includes:
🐾 A separate cat waiting area with raised seating, calming pheromone diffusers and carrier covers.
🐾 Two dedicated cat-only consultation rooms designed with feline comfort in mind.
🐾 A large cat ward with dedicated procedure rooms and a separate isolation area to provide the highest standard of care.

The International Cat Care campaign reminds us of three simple ways to support feline health:
🐱 C is for Cat Friendly - ways to care for and interact with your cat. This means understanding your cat and considering their individual needs throughout their lifetime. Even small changes that you make can have a big difference to their health and wellbeing.

🩺 A is for Annual check-ups - at the vet to help keep your cat healthy and happy. All cats should have at least one annual check at the clinic to spot health or behavioural problems as early as possible, but we know stressful vet visits can be a barrier. iCatCare's Cat Friendly programmes and practical resources support owners, caregivers and vet teams to take steps to reduce stress.

πŸ’™ T is for Tips and advice - to help you care for your cat through all stages of their life. When it comes to your cat's health and wellbeing, finding trusted advice can be confusing. Find FREE expert-led and science-backed information and advice on the iCatCare website. https://icatcare.org/international-cat-day

🐱 Happy International Cat Day! 🐾

Today we're celebrating our feline friends - the curious explorers, expert nappers, and beloved family members who bring so much joy to our lives.

Cats are masters at hiding signs of illness, so even subtle changes in their behaviour, appetite, or activity can be an important clue that something isn't quite right. Early recognition and veterinary care can make a significant difference to their health and wellbeing. International Cat Care

At DWR Veterinary Specialists, we're proud to support cats requiring advanced diagnostics, specialist treatment, and compassionate care, working alongside your family vet to achieve the best possible outcomes.

Today, give your cat an extra cuddle, a favourite treat, and an extra "I love you!"

We'd love to see them - share a photo of your feline companion in the comments below! πŸˆπŸ’™

πŸŽ‰ Congratulations to our Surgery Team! πŸŽ‰

We're delighted to celebrate the publication of a new paper in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery (JFMS), co-authored by our brilliant Head of Surgery, Rachal Hattersley, alongside one of our former interns. Congratulations to everyone involved in this fantastic achievement! πŸ‘
'Evaluation of the incidence of haematuria following the placement of subcutaneous ureteral bypass devices in 18 cats (2016-2022)'

πŸ’ Let's find out more.... Subcutaneous Ureteral Bypass (SUB) devices

🐱 Did you know? The ureter - the tiny tube that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder in a cat - has an internal diameter of just 0.4 mm. Despite its size, it plays a vital role in kidney function. Unfortunately, kidney stones can sometimes become lodged within the ureter, blocking the flow of urine and creating a life-threatening emergency.

In many of these cases, surgery is needed to place a SUB device. This innovative system bypasses the blockage, restoring urine flow from the kidney to the bladder and giving affected cats the best chance of recovery.

At DWR, our surgery team has many years of experience in placing SUB devices and providing the specialised long-term care these patients require. We're also committed to advancing veterinary knowledge through research.

We're especially proud that, alongside the recent article published in the JFMS paper, our fantastic Nicola Mansbridge (Resident in small animal surgery) also presented research at the World Feline Congress 2026 on the Quality of Life of Cats Living with SUB devices - helping to improve the care and outcomes for feline patients everywhere.

Congratulations again to the team on these fantastic contributions to feline medicine! πŸ’™πŸΎ

πŸŽ—οΈ Sarcoma Awareness Month πŸŽ—οΈ

This month is dedicated to raising awareness of sarcomas, promoting early diagnosis, and supporting patients affected by this type of cancer. Just like humans, dogs can sadly develop sarcomas too, and they account for around 15% of canine cancers

🩺 Teamwork in Action: Oncology + Soft Tissue Surgery

Jasper was referred to our Oncology Specialist, David Brewer, after a rapidly growing mass over his right shoulder was diagnosed as a soft tissue sarcoma. A CT scan was performed to assess the tumour and plan surgery, revealing a very large mass.

Jasper then underwent surgery with Rachel Hattersley to remove the tumour. Despite its challenging size and location, the procedure went smoothly, and he was able to return home the following day. πŸΆπŸ’™

The best news came from the laboratory results: complete margins were achieved, and the tumour was classified as low grade, indicating less aggressive behaviour.

We're delighted with Jasper's outcome and proud of the collaborative approach between our Oncology and Soft Tissue Surgery teams. Most importantly, we're thrilled that this lovely boy is doing so well. ✨

πŸŽ—οΈ Sarcoma Awareness Month πŸŽ—οΈ

This month is dedicated to raising awareness of sarcomas, promoting early diagnosis, and supporting patients affected by this type of cancer. Just like humans, dogs can sadly develop sarcomas too, and they account for around 15% of canine cancers.

Meet Sapphire, our superstar. πŸ’™πŸΆ

When Sapphire, an adorable Chihuahua, was referred to our oncology team in February, her primary care vet had diagnosed a large soft tissue sarcoma over her left hip.

Angelo Capasso, European Veterinary Specialist in Oncology, carried out further investigations to help plan the best treatment and, importantly, to check whether the cancer had spread. We were delighted to find no evidence of secondary spread, giving Sapphire the best possible chance for surgery.

Sapphire then underwent surgery with our Brilliant Head of Soft Tissue Surgery, Rachel Hattersley. Despite the size of the tumour, it was successfully removed with a complete (albeit narrow) margin of healthy tissue surrounding the cancer.

Rachel tells us, "We're thrilled to share that, at the time of writing, Sapphire is doing wonderfully, with no signs of the cancer returning". 🌟

Sarcomas are cancers that develop in the bone or the body's soft tissues. They often appear as a lump beneath the skin, but not every lump is harmless. That's why it's so important not to ignore any new or growing masses - early assessment and treatment can make a real difference.

We're incredibly proud of Sapphire and how well she has done throughout her treatment. πŸ’•

If you notice a lump or bump on your pet, even if it doesn't seem to bother them, it's always worth having it checked by your vet. Early detection really can save lives.

Please join us in celebrating Sapphire and helping to spread awareness this Sarcoma Awareness Month. πŸŽ—οΈ

πŸ’™ Remembering Indie 🐾

Today, we remember Indie, a truly special patient who touched the hearts of everyone at DWR.

With the support of her devoted owners, who wanted to share Indie's story, we'd like to celebrate her incredible courage and honour the journey she took with us.

During 2025-2026, Indie showed remarkable strength and resilience following devastating injuries sustained in a dog attack. Under the care of our brilliant surgeon, Nicola, and the wider team, she underwent multiple reconstructive surgeries and extensive wound management, facing every challenge with unwavering spirit.

Nicola shared:
"Indie, such a lovely dog with wonderful owners who were so committed to her care and so grateful throughout for everything everyone at the practice had done for them."

One of our favourite memories is seeing Indie ring the DWR Bravery Bell - a moment that symbolised her determination and everything she had overcome. We've shared the video in tribute to her extraordinary spirit.

We feel very privileged to have been part of her journey. Our heartfelt thanks go to her family for trusting us with her care and for allowing us to share her story. We hope her journey serves as a reminder of the resilience of our patients, the dedication of their families, and the expert care and never-ending compassion of our teams at DWR who care for them.

Run free, sweet Indie. You will always hold a special place in our hearts. πŸŒˆπŸ’™

πŸ’™ Life at DWR: What Our Nurses Say About Our PCAs

Our Patient Care Assistants are at the heart of everything we do, supporting our patients, our nurses and the wider team every single day.

Here's what Charlotte, one of our amazing Night Nurses, has to say about the vital role our PCAs play. πŸ‘‡

"Our PCAs are instrumental in the care of our patients and are an invaluable part of the team. They are often at the forefront of providing comfort, enrichment, and reassurance, playing a key role in promoting animal welfare throughout the hospital. From keeping patients fed, walked, clean and medicated, to keeping a close eye on their wellbeing, they make a real difference every day. By working closely together, PCAs and veterinary nurses form a strong team that helps ensure every patient receives the highest standard of care.

As well as caring for our patients, PCAs are essential in keeping the hospital running efficiently. They help maintain a clean and hygienic environment, restock supplies, prepare equipment, and support the wider team wherever needed. Their role is incredibly varied, and their hard work often goes unnoticed, but we truly couldn’t do our jobs without them." πŸ’™

Interested in becoming part of our team? We'd love to hear from you.
