Why Mental Stimulation is Just as Important as Exercise for Your Puppy
When most people bring a new puppy home, their focus naturally goes to walks, playtime, and basic training. But what often gets overlooked is the role of mental stimulation in shaping how that puppy develops — not just behaviourally, but emotionally and cognitively.
A puppy’s brain grows and changes at an astonishing rate in those first few months. Without the right kind of mental engagement, that rapid growth can turn into frustration or anxiety, which often shows up later as chewing, barking, or other destructive behaviours.
The good news is that mental stimulation doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. It can be as simple as turning mealtime into a puzzle, hiding treats for your puppy to find, or letting them lead a slow “sniff walk” where they explore new scents and textures. These small moments of problem-solving help build confidence, focus, and resilience — traits that last well into adulthood.
In my latest article, I explore how mental enrichment shapes brain development in young dogs, along with practical activities you can use to build it into your routine from day one. If you’re raising a puppy, it’s well worth understanding how much these early experiences affect their long-term wellbeing.
