We nurture the mental and physical wellbeing of adults with learning disabilities by involving them in running a community farm which brings joy and learning to 30,000 local visitors per year. Through structured placements across our bustling farmyard, gardens and visitor centre, they interact with nature and the wider community, helping them to overcome low self-esteem, loneliness and achieve powerful, lasting change in their wellbeing.

*Feel good Monday story*

We recently lost our female Cockatiel, Linda, leaving Bob on his own. He was really down; cockatiels are meant to live in pairs, and his sad singing was quite heartbreaking.

We put the feelers out to find him a new mate and were delighted when Louise and Anya got in touch. Their cockatiel was also lonely after its mate had passed away.

We decided to let Bob go and live a new life away from the farm. Here he is (left) meeting his new friend for the first time 🥹. Apparently they are now the best of friends.

We loved having the very talented photographer Christopher Owens at the farm recently to take some pro bono staff photos for us 📷. These are our team's faves - aren't they great! 🔥

Thank you again for being so generous with your time 😊.

(Our lovely team members Anna & Maria B missed out on the day but we'll snap some special pictures of them soon to add to the collection).

Well, yesterday we hosted our first Harvest Festival and it's safe to say we had a great time! Thank you to all of you who came and joined in, whether you entered a competition, made a craft, ran the fell race, or just enjoyed the day seeing the animals and sampling some of the lovely bakes, chutneys and jams.

We would love to hear from you if you came along. Did you have a favourite part of the day?

Some of our highlights...

🐷Our own fell runner Ruari leading the kids fell race up to city stadium and back, dressed as a pig. Well done everyone who ran, you are all troopers!

🐔The crafting, which went on all day! So many adorable farm headbands were made, we couldn't possibly include photos of all of them.

🏁Guinea (yes, that's his name) winning all three guinea pig races. Poor Maple did not even make it out of the tunnel.

🎙️Such great tunes providing excellent vibes in the afternoon from Rob Heron and Tom Cronin

⚖️All the entries for Guess the weight of Truffle - she weighed in at an impressive 320kg (55.5 stone) which two people guessed exactly!

🎃Some giant vegetables stole the show in the veg competitions.

🌞The beautiful Autumn sunshine helped to make the day feel really special.

🍰We had delicious baked entries and conserves from .ouseburn, Chef James from , some of the adults with additional needs who attend our Make and Bake class, and so many wonderful members of our community.

Big thank you to Jess from , Laura from , and Chef Kate from Cafe Beam who came to help judge some of the competitions, along with some of our own team. Thanks as well for lovely donated competition prizes from , and . We love the Ouseburn community!

As a community charity, we always want to be a space where everyone is welcome and cost is no barrier. If you had a good time and are able to make a donation towards our work, it will help us continue to offer more in future. Thank you. ♥️

Meet Nizar!

Nizar joined us through the New Start employment scheme earlier this year. It’s a programme creating tailored opportunities for people in social housing, with one-to-one support and access to free qualifications. This year we’re really pleased to be offering two New Start placements here at Ouseburn Farm.

Nizar has been an incredible addition to our team, he has so much love, care and knowledge of all the animals and is very welcoming and helpful to our visitors. We are lucky to have him at the farm.

🐑Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I am Nizar and I am a very social and supportive person. I like to spend my spare time walking in nature and enjoy talking to my friends and colleagues.

🐑What’s your role at the farm and how often do you come in?

I mostly work with the large animals, cleaning and feeding them. I work three days a week – Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

🐑What made you want to join the farm?

I wanted to join the farm because I have previous experience with animals and farms from my childhood. Growing up, I worked on my Dad’s farm with cows, goats, sheep, chickens, dogs and donkeys.

🐑What have you enjoyed about the farm so far?

I love coming into work. I have enjoyed spending time with my colleagues and caring for the animals.

🐑What do you enjoy about working with adults with learning disabilities?

I enjoy new experiences and getting to meet new people through my work. I enjoy supporting the adults with learning disabilities and giving them the opportunity to try new things.

🐑Funniest farm moment so far?

My funniest moment was when Willow the cow broke my watch. Willow was distracted by a box of vegetables as I was taking her out. I tried to steer her away from the veggies and she shunted me with her head, breaking my watch in the process. She is a very strong willed and stubborn cow.

🐑Do you have a favourite animal here?

My favourite animals at the farm are the sheep, I love that they make so much noise in the morning.

🐑What are you looking forward to working on in the next few months?

I am looking forward to spending more time at the farm and getting involved in new things such as the Harvest Festival this weekend.

🐑What would you say to other people thinking about getting involved at the farm?

I thoroughly enjoy my time at the farm. It has enriched my life through meeting colleagues that I get along with and working with animals.

Thank you Nizar!

Happy Autumn Equinox! 🍁🍂

The farm garden is starting to turn but there are still butterflies and bees enjoying the last of the flowers.

Don't forget it's our Harvest Festival this Sunday 28th September where we'll be celebrating all things farm-grown. 🎑

Yum! How delicious do these leek, mushroom and pancetta pasties made by Tom and Daniel look?

Some of the talented adults with additional needs on our Placement Programme will be entering some sweet and savoury bakes into our Harvest Festival competitions, and we'd love some entries from other visitors too, both kids and adults. We have some amazing prizes, including vouchers for local Ouseburn venues and toys from our shop.

Our Small Animals Room mural is finished! 🌿🎨🐝Thank you so much to the very talented Kate who worked tirelessly to get it all done, with some help from assistants Wade and our Small Animals Project Worker Emma. We hope you are giving your arms a good rest this week!

The mural has lots of hidden creatures, flora and fauna that visitors will be able to search for, including some of our farm favourites like Beavis and Doris.

This is part of the overall transformation of our Small Animals Room, generously funded by North Standard, which will also include new vivariums, shelving and some interesting new creatures in the near future.

And finally, thank you to our volunteers Tim and Steve, and to Head Gardener Karl for giving the shop a new lick of paint so it's all ready to reopen for visitors tomorrow - excellent team effort. 🖌️👏🏽

⛔️ Our Small Animal Room and Shop will be closed for the entire week and weekend as we are making some big changes! ⛔️

Kate is painting a mural for us which is going to be a really lovely addition to the room, featuring lots of interesting creatures for our visitors to enjoy and learn about.

In the near future we will also be changing the layout of the room, updating our vivariums and getting some intriguing new additions for you to meet 🐸.

Thank you for your patience while we complete this work. 🙏🏾

Our Story...

In case you're not entirely sure what we are, we’re a farm! But you won’t find us in the countryside. We're based right in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne. We've also got a lovely cafe serving delightful food, and wherever possible we utilise ingredients from the farm itself.

Ouseburn Farm is a local visitor attraction that’s supported by generous donations from people like you. We’re run by dedicated staff and volunteers for the benefit of the community and the environment. We’re a ‘working farm’ as well as a training and education centre. We’re not your typical farm, so you could say we’re a pretty unusual day out in town for all the family.

Our staff and volunteers create a friendly, positive and nourishing environment where everyone feels welcome and valued.

We genuinely want to make a lasting difference to people's lives; not just because doing good feels good, but because it's the right thing to do.
