Murton Equestrian Centre is a fully licensed, BHS approved, family run riding school in Tyne & Wear, owned by Derek & Leigh Belbin. Established in 1976, we pride ourselves in offering quality riding lessons in a safe and relaxed environment, for adults and children over 4 years. Situated a short drive from Whitle

y Bay and Newcastle Upon Tyne, we have ample parking and are perfectly placed for local transport links. We have a wide range of well-schooled horses and ponies to ride for all ages and standards. We have a large indoor and outdoor arena, which allows us to offer all year round riding. Plus an on site rider wear and tack shop for all your riding needs! As well as offering riding lessons, we are also one of the only riding schools in Tyne & Wear where pupils can also follow a comprehensive examination system with the Pony Club or with BHS Progressive Riding Tests/Challenge Awards. We also offer Unaffiliated Dressage and Showjumping competitions, perfect for first timers. The indoor and outdoor arenas are available to hire for horses and dog walking. They are all fully trained to offer riding instruction at all levels, including BHS Stages Training and Road Safety Training. We are licensed by North Tyneside Council. License number: 1600295AW. Fully insured.

☀️ It's getting hot!

We're loving the summer weather, but remember to make sure horses everywhere are kept cool, comfortable and safe...

💧 Water – Make sure fresh, clean water is always available. Check troughs and top up buckets regularly.

🌳 Shade and shelter – Horses need access to shade, whether natural or man-made, when turned out.

🌬️ Ventilation – Improve airflow in stables.

🧴 Sunburn – Protect pink skin with horse-specific sun cream or UV-protective fly masks.

🪰 Flies and midges – Use repellents correctly, keep stables clean and consider fly rugs and masks if required.

🏇 Exercise – Avoid the hottest times of day (10am–4pm) and cool your horse down thoroughly after work.

🚛 Travel – Travel early, keep trips short and ensure plenty of ventilation and hydration.

💜 Summer Holidays are nearly here! 💜

Junior/Teen Equestrian Club Week 10am-3pm Tues-Fri £200 (Available in Summer Holidays)

Our Week courses give riders the opportunity to look after their favorite pony from Tuesday to Friday (booking well in advance is advisable as the popular ponies are reserved very quickly!).

We will teach them how to groom, feed, muck out, tack clean and plait their ponies under the supervision of our instructors. Riders have to be Loose Level and Above.

On the Friday we will organize a gymkana (Pony Games) and their will be rosettes for everybody!

Remember to bring a packed lunch, riding equipment, pen, paper, small change for sweets and a grooming kit (if you own one) every day.

Minimum age 6 years and riders have to be able to walk trot and canter.

🐴Riding Training with Sandra Morrison BHSI🐴

23rd June and 28th July on school horses or your own horse.

All training in a small group, the half days training will also include Riding on the flat, over fences and lunging.

Sandra can help riders towards BHS Stage Exams and Pony Club Tests or help develop your riding to work in partnership with your horse.

Traning and Assessment delivered by Samantha Critchlow Stage 4 Coach.

Gain the confidence and skills to ride safely on roads and when out and about. Know how to plan routes and prepare yourself and your horse to enjoy the countryside.
➡️How to ride in an enclosed arena with other riders
➡️How to ride with the reins in one hand
➡️Checks to make before setting off
➡️How to ask other road users to slow down or stop
➡️Riding out on a road

This award is a pre-requisite to the BHS Stage 1. The course is run one day it will include all training theory and practical then an assessment. BHS Ride Safe booklets included and costs £85.

We are running a 5 week course covering the BHS stage 2 & 3 coaching syllabus . If you are keen to become a qualified coach, this course will prepare you for the BHS exam.
Delivering the training is one of our Gold Coach's Charlotte Belbin who is a Stage 4 Complete Coach.
The sessions will be a mix of demo riding and coaching. Observer places are also available.
£50 per session, it's advised you do the whole 5 weeks .

It takes time, patience and lots of practice to improve your riding and you can never stop learning. Sometime you have off days and set backs. Aim for progress not perfection ⬇️

1️⃣ Level 1 - Complete Beginner (Walk & Trot on Lead-rein/Lunge)
2️⃣ Level 2 - Beginner (Walk and Trot off Lead-rein/Lunge)
3️⃣ Level 3 - Loose (Learning to Canter)
4️⃣ Level 4 - Novice (Canter and Poles)
5️⃣ Level 5 - Intermediate (BHS Stage 1, Learning to jump >45cm)
6️⃣ Level 6 - Senior (BHS Stage 2, Jumping >75cm)
7️⃣ Level 7 - Advanced (BHS Stage 3)
7️⃣ Level 8 - Performance (BHS Stage 4)

🧐 What grade am I? Unfortunately the system doesn't show you your assigned grade, only the groups suitable for you to join. Please speak to your instructor to discuss your grading.
