Murton Equestrian Centre is a fully licensed, BHS approved, family run riding school in Tyne & Wear, owned by Derek & Leigh Belbin. Established in 1976, we pride ourselves in offering quality riding lessons in a safe and relaxed environment, for adults and children over 4 years. Situated a short drive from Whitle

y Bay and Newcastle Upon Tyne, we have ample parking and are perfectly placed for local transport links. We have a wide range of well-schooled horses and ponies to ride for all ages and standards. We have a large indoor and outdoor arena, which allows us to offer all year round riding. Plus an on site rider wear and tack shop for all your riding needs! As well as offering riding lessons, we are also one of the only riding schools in Tyne & Wear where pupils can also follow a comprehensive examination system with the Pony Club or with BHS Progressive Riding Tests/Challenge Awards. We also offer Unaffiliated Dressage and Showjumping competitions, perfect for first timers. The indoor and outdoor arenas are available to hire for horses and dog walking. They are all fully trained to offer riding instruction at all levels, including BHS Stages Training and Road Safety Training. We are licensed by North Tyneside Council. License number: 1600295AW. 🟪 BHS Coaching Training 🟪

We are running a 5 session course covering the BHS stage 2 & 3 coaching syllabus. (Extra sessions can be arranged on a private basis.) If you are keen to become a qualified coach, this course will prepare you to go forward and take the BHS Assessment.

Delivering the training is one of our Gold Coach's Charlotte Belbin who is a Stage 4 Complete Coach.
The sessions will be a mix of demo riding and coaching. Observer places are also available.
£50 per session, it's advised you do the whole 5 weeks .

🐎Doing your girth and stirrups is a safety check and is included in all level of lessons 🐎

As you move through our levels and ride with less support we’ll encourage you to do your own girth and stirrups. Tightening your horse’s girth involves lifting your leg over the front of the saddle (foot still in the stirrup), lifting the saddle flap and then slowly and gently pulling up the girth straps using one finger to push the buckle into the hole. It can take a bit of practice but it’s worth spending the time as it’s key to having a safe ride!

If you would like to practice adjusting your girth and stirrups, meaning it takes you less time in your group session (more riding time) please look out for our sessions on Tuesday’s at 5pm. 😄

You will be able to learn and practice grooming, tacking up, mounting, girth and stirrups, dismounting and untacking. Each week we will focus on a different part of the process so you need to come for a few weeks to learn about them all.

The plight of British Riding Schools…

The recent sad news of York Riding School closure has brought to light the serious challenges currently facing riding schools across the country. 😔

The British Horse Society (BHS) estimates that 15% of riding schools have closed in the last few years, with surveys showing that over 20 more are closing this summer alone. This highlights a significant and worrying shift for our industry.

The last few years have been difficult for all small local businesses, with costs rising across the board. Rising costs in feed, farriery, vets, staff wages etc have all been very difficult to navigate.

However, this summer is proving to be the final nail in the coffin for many riding schools. The hot, dry weather has meant hay crops have not grown. This means less hay, haylage, and straw is available, which is pushing prices up. 📈

Like many centres, we have also had to start feeding our winter stocks throughout the summer due to the lack of grass growth, further increasing demand on a dwindling supply.

We ask that you continue to support your local riding schools wherever possible during these difficult times. Any reputable riding school will not compromise on their horses' welfare, which is our top priority, and that dedication comes at a cost.

On a brighter note, we have some availability for new customers and some of our lesson’s are able to accommodate new riders of all ages and abilities.

🟣 ‘Really friendly staff who was calm and understanding with the girls nervousness, which is especially needed for my oldest really appreciated the support and calming environment’

🟣 ‘The instructor who led my grandchildren, age 2 and 4 years old, was just brilliant with the horses and them. The other lady who came to help find them hats was also totally lovely. We felt very welcome and in safe hands. As for the people booking, they were very patient with someone not really IT proficient! Thank you so much.’

Riding offer significant therapeutic benefits, and many of our participants are referred by medical professionals. The warmth, rhythm and three dimensional movement of the horse is transmitted through the rider’s body, and can help in relaxing tight muscles, strengthening core stability, reducing spasms and improving balance, posture and co-ordination.
