Meet the handsome Copia!

Copia visited Staffordshire Vets this week for his castration procedure, and we're pleased to say he was an absolute gentleman throughout his stay with us. Just look at those striking eyes!

You may have noticed that Copia has two different coloured eyes. This is known as heterochromia, and it occurs when the amount of pigment differs between the eyes during development.

Heterochromia is particularly common in white cats, like Copia. The genes responsible for white coat colour can sometimes affect the distribution of pigment in the eyes, resulting in one blue eye and one eye of a different colour, such as green, yellow or amber.

Did you know?

Heterochromia isn't unique to cats? It can also be seen in: Dogs (particularly breeds such as Huskies, Border Collies and Great Danes), Horses, Cattle, some bird species and even humans!

One thing many people don't know is that some white cats with blue eyes can be born deaf, although this isn't always the case and many live perfectly normal, happy lives.

Copia was a wonderful patient and is at home recovering, where we're sure he'll be enjoying plenty of fuss and attention.

Does your pet have different coloured eyes? We'd love to see them! Please post them below :)

Just look at these two beautiful guinea pigs!

They came into Staffordshire Vets recently to see Tony and Mia for a nail clip, and we have to say they were absolutely wonderful patients from start to finish.

Many pet owners find nail clipping a little daunting, and we completely understand why. It can be particularly tricky when pets have dark or black nails, making it difficult to see where the quick (the blood vessel inside the nail) ends.

The good news is that we're happy to help!

We offer nail clipping for most species, from guinea pigs and rabbits to birds, reptiles, cats and dogs. Whether you're worried about doing it yourself or your pet simply isn't keen on having their feet handled, our team is here to help keep those nails at a comfortable length.

Of course, it always makes our job a little easier when patients are as well-behaved as these two gorgeous guinea pigs!

📍 Look who’s made it to Morrisons Milehouse! 🐾

We’re pleased to have Staffordshire Vets featured on the community advertising board at Morrisons Milehouse, Newcastle-under-Lyme.

It’s a great way for us to reach local pet owners and let more people know about our independent veterinary practice. If you’re in store, keep an eye out for our poster!

Have you seen it?

Some of you may remember Maggi the Shih Tzu, who has featured on our page before! 💕

This lovely girl was back with us today to have a lump removed under general anaesthesia.

As always, Maggi was an absolute sweetheart. In fact, she was so excited to see everyone who walked into the kennel area that we moved her to a lower kennel to make it easier for her to greet her admirers safely!

We're pleased to say that Maggi has now gone home to continue her recovery, complete with pain relief to keep her comfortable.

Did you know that our routine surgical procedures include two complimentary post-operative nurse checks?

These appointments allow us to:
● Check how the wound is healing
● Monitor your pet's recovery
● Answer any questions you may have
● Hear how your pet has been getting on at home

They are a great opportunity for owners to discuss any concerns and for us to make sure recovery is progressing as expected.

We hope you're feeling better soon, Maggi! Thank you for being such a wonderful patient, as always!

Meet one of our more unusual patients! 😊

This beautiful Axolotl was rushed into Staffordshire Vets after her owners noticed she had become swollen and appeared to have "ballooned" up in her tank.

Our Senior Vet, Dom, and Head Veterinary Nurse, Tony, carried out diagnostics as part of her treatment plan to help determine the cause and get her on the road to recovery.

Just look at this amazing creature! Axolotls are fascinating amphibians, famous for their feathery external gills and their remarkable ability to regenerate body parts. They are certainly not a patient we see every day, but they are always a welcome sight.

Many people are surprised to learn that we treat a wide variety of species at Staffordshire Vets. From fish, amphibians, reptiles and birds, right through to rabbits, cats and dogs, our team is here to help all members of your family, no matter how many legs they have (or don't have!).

If you would like to register your pet or make an appointment, please give us a call:

** Monday Morning Syrian Hamster Appreciation Post 😁

This beautiful little patient reminded us just how much hamster care has changed over the years.

If you haven't owned a hamster for a while, some of the advice many of us grew up with is now considered outdated as we understand their welfare much better.

For example:

● Hamster balls are no longer considered a safe form of exercise by many welfare organisations.

Whilst they were once incredibly popular, we now know they can be stressful for hamsters. They limit a hamster's ability to use their senses properly, prevent access to food, water and hiding places, and can pose risks of injury and overheating. Secure playpens and larger enclosures are now recommended instead.

● Hamster homes have become much bigger too.

Modern welfare guidance recommends a minimum enclosure size of around 100cm x 50cm of unbroken 'floor space', with larger always being better. Despite their tiny size, hamsters are active animals that can travel huge distances in the wild and need space to explore, forage and express natural behaviours.

● They also need deep bedding.

Hamsters are natural burrowers, so modern recommendations suggest providing enough substrate for them to dig tunnels and create their own underground sleeping areas. Many hamster owners now provide 20–25cm or more of suitable bedding.

● And yes... they still need a wheel!

But bigger is better. Wheels should be large enough to allow a hamster to run with a straight back, helping to avoid strain and discomfort.

Fun fact: wild hamsters can travel several miles in a single night, which explains why your pet hamster suddenly decides that 2am is the perfect time to begin a marathon training programme.

We think this gorgeous little visitor deserves today's award for Most Photogenic Patient

****

We hope you enjoyed this post. Something a little different for the start of the week.

We are open, as usual, from 9am this morning. Please give us a call if you would like to register as a new client, if you've added a new pet to your family and would like them adding to your pet records or if you'd like to make an appointment 😊

List of animals needing homes 🖤

Please message via Staffordshire Vets Exotic Rescue

🐍 Corn snake – been with us a year, he’s so friendly.

🐍 Ball python – big girl and the softest girl. She’s nearly been with us a year.

🐍 Younger ball python – needs expert care only.

🦎 Male crested gecko.

🦎 Female bearded dragon – she has severe metabolic bone disease due to improper diet and housing before coming to us. She was found dumped in a park.
She doesn’t need medication, she’s just very slow. Such a friendly girl and she just needs love. Sadly there’s nothing that can reverse MBD, it can only be managed.

🐢 Lastly, our female Horsfield tortoise. Scroll down on our exotic page to read her story. I’ve worked so hard for months to keep her alive. She will need expert care only.

Please do not message just because a family member “wants a reptile .”These animals need proper, knowledgeable homes committed to their care for life.
