With increased stabling of our equine friends and the cold, wet weather, one of the things to look out for are MITES! Especially if your horse has a lot of feathers as this creates a warm, moist environment perfect for mite survival.
What is a Mite?
A Mite is a small parasite that is too small to see with the naked eye. The mite that most commonly causes the itching of a horse’s legs is Chorioptes Equi.
What to look out for:
Itching usually express itself by feet stamping and leg rubbing, dandruff like flakes, redness and scabbing around the pastern and fetlock area.
TOP TIP:
Clip off the feathers and wash with an anti-dandruff shampoo
Killing off the mite in the environment is also extremely important as it can live in straw, wood, rugs, brushes etc for weeks.
