A funny thing happened today. One of our smallest dogs, Queenie, had her appointment just after one of our largest dogs, Magnus. The photo doesn’t show just how large he is- he weighs almost the same as Heather.
Queenie wasn’t impressed.

We are sad to report that a we have had a fatal case of parvovirus dog in our postcode area (KY14 6**) today.

Parvovirus is a contagious disease spread through infected faeces. It is often fatal. The most at risk groups are young (under 2) or geriatric dogs. Vaccination greatly improves survival rate and reduces spread.

If your dog is overdue its booster, please contact your vet to get back up to date, whether it’s us or another practice. If your dog has vomiting and diarrhoea, please keep them away from public spaces.

Thank you.

Surgical suite:
Welcome to the op theatre! The lighting is bright and comes from many sources to reduce shadows (I’m in fear of burning my retinas though!). It’s quite a sparse room so it’s easy to clean down and keep sterile. The flooring curves up the wall instead of skirtings so there’s no corners that evade the mop. The walls are plastic coated so they can be disinfected and wiped down. There is natural daylight from our restored sash & case window (thanks to Danny Wilkie Joinery) - who knew there was a window behind the fridges in the old co-op?!
We are still deciding where the clocks should go, the current policy is to wait until we are looking for something then put it in the place we looked first!

The table was originally designed for humans. You can fold the ends down, and crank it to tilt the whole thing which is handy if we are worried about aspiration or in cases of morbid obesity and heavy pregnancy where the weight of the abdomen presses on the chest cavity and makes breathing difficult.

It takes a while to get used to having so much space!

We have moved!

It’s been an outrageously busy day, and I got a bit frazzled and grumpy along the way, but after 7 happy years at 150 High St we have now moved into 128-134 High St, the old co-op building beside Tasty Wok.

We will put up more photos over the next few days, but from Monday morning we will be working from our new premises so you’ll be able to see it for yourselves.

There are still things to do and sort out, so you might have to bear with us a bit but we are working on it.

The window graphics weren’t finalised in time, so we have had to improvise!

I am so grateful to everyone that has helped us get this far, so many family, friends, clients, even ex-clients from other practices I have worked at over the years. This last week has truly been a team effort, and I’ve had the best people around me.

We look forward to welcoming you to the slightly bigger (!) Heather Vets!

Reception!
Robbie & Cory got the shelves up on the wall, so that is the reception area now complete. Everything gets wall mounted so we can keep the floor clean, no place for bugs to hide from Ruth’s mop!
The shelves on the left have come from the current surgery, Willi made them for us in 2018 and they’ve been so good that I wanted to take them with me. They’ve had a bit of TLC, a tickle with the sandpaper and three coats of paint and are ready to serve us again for the next few years.
The shelves on the right are a bigger version of the ones we already have. Robbie made them from a drawing I gave him. You can’t see it clearly in this photo, but the left side has very rounded corners. Why? Distracted vets bustling about the place have a habit of bashing hips and shoulders off the shelves as we cut the corner coming out of the consult room and heading into the prep room and vice versa. This reduces the chances of that happening, and also makes smaller bruises when it does.

Another room finished ✅

This is a day I’ve waited a long time for. I’ve seen quite a few people stopping to notice as they go past too!

Today Lindsay hung the wallpaper in the waiting area. I love it, it makes the place feel complete and much friendlier. It’s quite a big space and so this softens it down a bit.

The building is also now officially registered as a veterinary practice with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.

There’s not much left to do now, although I think I’ll be spending a lot of the weekend with a mop in my hand.
