Three hoof cuttings. ⌚️One hour in the sun. ☀️🌡️Very different results.

⬅️ Nothing applied (left)
⬆️ Soaked in water (middle)
➡️ Kevin Bacon's Original Hoof Dressing (right)

The untreated hoof sample has shrunk significantly after just one hour of sun exposure.

Dry hooves are more prone to cracking, splitting and contraction. This is also why clenches can appear to rise faster in summer—when the hoof loses moisture, it shrinks around the shoe.

Daily application of Kevin Bacon's Original Hoof Dressing helps maintain the hoof's natural moisture balance and keeps hooves supple, healthy and protected.

Feed the hoof. Don't just grease it. 🐴✨

It is that time of year again... the spring grass is growing and laminitis cases are increasing. One of the main things we can do to prevent laminitis is weight management:

🐴 Body condition scoring regularly - there are two body condition scoring scales out there, depending on the scale horses should be either 4-5/9 or 3/5.
⚖ Weigh taping regularly - although not the most accurate gage of weight, weigh tapes can be really useful to monitor if your horse is gaining or losing weight.
🌱 Reducing grass intake - this can be achieved by reducing time on pasture, reducing the area of pasture, grazing muzzles or having the paddock "pre-grazed" by your horses skinny friends.
🍃 Reducing other sugar intake - for weight loss, or horses prone to or being treated for laminitis, hay should be soaked for 12 hours, other feed should be low in sugar and starch and sugary treats should be kept to a minimum.
🏇 Exercise - exercise is a very important component of weight management, this can take any form you like and does not necessarily have to be overly strenuous to be effective. Swimming can also be a great form of exercise to help weight loss as it is hard work without putting stress on the legs.

Treating and recognising underlying conditions is also important to reduce the risk of laminitis. Blood tests for EMS and PPID will help us to assess the risk of individual horses and early treatment can help to prevent laminitis in affected horses. Both of these conditions require careful management and can also be treated medically.

Your horse just kicked the farrier… again?! 😱
Let’s stop turning your farrier into a punching bag.

Most “farrier issues” are not mean horses. They’re under trained feet and rushed handling, especially in winter.

You do not need long training sessions.
You need a 2 minute daily habit that stacks fast.

The Minimum Effective Dose (do this while feeding or turning out):
1. Stand still + square (20 sec)
If they drift, calmly reset. No drama.
2. Pick up + hold each foot low and comfortable (about 10 to 20 sec per foot)
You set the foot down when they are calm.
Do not reward yanking. Wait for one calm second, then release.

Quick progression:
Week 1: 3 to 5 sec per foot
Week 2: 5 to 10 sec
Weeks 3 to 6: build to 20 to 60 sec with tiny breaks

Once a week: 5 minute “Farrier Rehearsal”
Longer holds, light hoof pick taps, tiny position shifts.

Winter bonus: pick hooves daily in mud and manure. Easiest thrush prevention ever.

Who’s tried a routine like this? Drop a ❤️ if your farrier has horror stories like these pics.
