Starting your gundog journey is about more than just commands...it’s about having the right tools to speak your dog's language. At Chatheroe Dog Training, these four essentials are the foundation of every successful session...

The Whistle: A constant in a world of variables. Whether directing a long-distance cast or handling a tight hunt close at hand, it provides a pitch-perfect clarity that your voice simply cannot match. Because the tone remains identical regardless of who is handling the dog, it removes confusion and provides the steady, unwavering consistency every working breed craves.

The Slip Lead: A connection built on trust, not tension. Simple and refined, it allows for effortless transitions and encourages a natural heel without the clutter of heavy hardware.

The Dummy: The bridge between play and purpose. Designed with the weight and texture of the field, it teaches the patience of a steady heart and the gentle grace of a soft mouth.

The Bond: Our true heritage. It is that unspoken language between handler and hound that transforms raw, wild instinct into a mastered craft.

Preparation is the first step toward a good working dog. Whether you're in your garden or out in the field, start with the basics done right.

What’s the one item you never leave the house without for training?

Grass seeds might look harmless
but they can cause serious problems for your dog.

As the weather warms up, these tiny seeds become a real hazard. They’re a narrow shape with a sharp point, and that can mean once stuck in the skin they can burrow into your dog’s body. They commonly get stuck between toes, in ears, eyes, noses, armpits and the groin area.

They can cause painful swelling, infections, abscesses, ear infections, eye ulcers, sneezing, nasal discharge, limping and excessive licking. In some cases, they can even travel under the skin and require surgery to remove.

Check your dog after every walk, especially their paws, ears and fur, and avoid long dry grass where possible. If your dog shows any signs of discomfort, contact your vet.

Stay safe and enjoy your walks!

We are pleased to be exploring something a little more tailored for the summer months.

We are considering introducing weekday evening training sessions, designed specifically around breed type, allowing for more focused, relevant and effective group work in the field.

These sessions would be divided into three distinct groups:

- Retriever (Labrador, Flat Coat, Curly Coat, Chesapeake and Duck Tolling)
- Spaniel (Cocker, Springer, Sussex, Welsh, Clumber, Irish Water and Field)
- HPR (Viszla, Pointer, Bracco, Brittany and Weimaraner)

If you have a CROSSBREED they are of course WELCOME! Please message me so we can determine the best group for them.

Each session would run for one hour on our training grounds at NAUNTON or ASCOTT UNDER WYCHWOOD, with exercises carefully adapted to suit the natural working style, pace and expectations of each group. The aim is to provide a more considered training environment, where dogs and handlers can progress with clarity and purpose alongside others working to a similar standard.

These evenings would be structured, progressive and practical, covering key elements such as steadiness, handling, retrieving, hunting patterns and real-world scenarios, all delivered in a calm and professional setting.

Before confirming dates, we would value your input.

If this is something you would be interested in attending, please comment below your BREED and preferred LOCATION.

Your feedback will help shape how these sessions are run.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Recall isn’t just about coming back...it’s about coming back with purpose, control, and understanding.

Here, the dog is recalled cleanly off lead and brought straight into heel position, calmly and without fuss. This comes from consistent training, clear expectations, and good timing. If using the whistle, this would be three short pips...simple, consistent, and well understood by the dog.

When introducing a whistle recall, call your dog verbally first, then add the whistle as they’re already coming towards you. This helps build association and understanding. Always reinforce with a high-value reward to make returning worthwhile.

A reliable recall into heel is invaluable, particularly for working dogs. It allows you to regain control quickly and maintain composure in higher distraction environments, whether in the field or on a walk.

The Jack Russell Terrier was born in the 1800s thanks to Reverend John Russell, who wanted the perfect fox-hunting partner...fearless, fast, and clever enough to think for itself. Their job was to bolt foxes from their dens, which meant squeezing into tight spaces and never backing down.

Fast forward to today, and that same bold spirit is very much alive. Jack Russells are smart, stubborn, endlessly energetic, and always ready for action. They don’t just live life...they charge at it full speed.

That’s why training isn’t optional with this breed...it’s essential. Give them a job, keep their minds busy, and you’ll have a loyal, hilarious, and unstoppable little companion.

Handle the energy right
and they’ll absolutely steal your heart like little lady Ruby đŸŸ

A small, focused retrieving workshop taking place near Stow-on-the-Wold, designed for working breeds ready to develop clean, confident retrieves in a structured, open training environment.

This session will focus on marked retrieves, memory work, and delivery to hand, helping to build consistency, control, and understanding in the field.

Dogs must be retrieving and delivering confidently, have a reliable recall, basic steadiness, and be comfortable working off lead in a rural setting. All dogs must be stock-aware and under control around livestock and horses.
