Hip Dysplasia in dogs is a developmental condition where the joint does not form properly, this can lead to issues later in life such as arthritis and mobility difficulties.

Hip Dysplasia can present itself at a very early age, even in young puppies. Breeds at higher risk tend to be larger breeds like German Shepherds and Labrador Retrievers.

Symptoms can include:
* Difficulty lying down and getting up
* Limping or lameness
* Reluctant to go on walks or engage in play
* Difficultly climb stairs
* Pain/sensitivity to touch in the hip region

Ways to combat Hip Dysplasia can include:
* Weight management, to avoid excess strain on joints
* Low impact exercise and strengthening exercises for the surrounding hip muscles
* Hydrotherapy to encourage exercise with buoyancy to take some of the load of the joints
* Pain relief
* Surgery

An appointment with a musculoskeletal professional can help guide you and your dog with targeted exercise plans and pain relieving tools.

I have been seeing this sweetheart for a few weeks now as she has damaged her Achilles tendon. It is going to be a long road but she is doing really well and we are seeing improvements already from a mix of physical therapy, added brace support, and targeted class IV laser therapy

Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) in dogs

Bit of a long one… but it is so important to talk about!

What is it?

Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) is a common spinal disease in dogs where the discs between the bones in the back break down, reducing their shock-absorbing ability, which can lead to pain, nerve damage, or even paralysis.

How can physiotherapy help?

Physiotherapy can help ease your dog’s pain and swelling, boost their body’s natural healing, and build up their strength so they can move more comfortably.

What might sessions look like for dogs with IVDD?

Sessions could vary depending on the severity and type of IVDD, as well as whether they had surgery or not.

There is no one size fits all, however the general principles and goals are the same!

Their initial consultation would include a full visual and hands-on assessment, followed by manual therapies, home recommendations, and exercise prescription.

At Rookery Canine, we also have access to Class IV laser therapy and tecar radio frequency which has been proven to boost healing and address inflammation.

Goals for treatment will include:

* Reducing pain
* Increasing strength
* Increasing limb awareness
* Maintaining flexibility
* Promoting ambulation and improved function
* Increasing exercise intensity

If you have any queries or concerns about your own animal, whether you have been through this disease before or would like to talk through a strengthening program for your dog’s back, please don’t hesitate get in touch.
