🐾 How to Keep Your Pets Cool This Summer ☀️
Hot weather can be dangerous for our furry friends. Here’s a few tips to keep your pet safe and comfortable when temperatures rise:
🐶 Dogs:
🐾 Always provide access to fresh water and shady spots all day.
🐾Walk early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler. Hot pavements can burn paws.
🐾Cooling Gear: Try cooling mats or frozen treats.
🐾Never Leave in a Car, even a few minutes can be deadly.
🐾Avoid using metal bowls as these can heat up in the sun.
🐱Cats:
🐾Cool Spaces, let them find cool areas like tiled floors.
🐾Hydration, make sure fresh water is always accessible, you could also try a cat water fountain to encourage drinking.
🐾Brush regularly to remove excess fur.
🐾Keep play sessions calm during the hottest parts of the day.
🐰Rabbits & 🐹Guinea Pigs
🐾Keep hutches and runs in shaded and ventilated areas.
🐾Freeze a semi-full plastic bottle of water and wrap it in a towel so your pets can lie against it when being supervised.
(For small rodents, place it on the outside of their enclosure. It's safest not to put it directly in small rodents enclosures in case it leaks)
🐾Make sure plenty of fresh water is accessible to keep them hydrated. (have multiple bottles you can rotate to avoid the spout getting hot)
🐾Offer chilled veggies.
🐾Monitor Behavior, Watch for signs of heat stroke like heavy breathing or lethargy.
🐾Look out for flystrike - look out for; fly egg (small grains of white rice), dirty bottoms, changes in behavior E.g. fidgeting, agitated, off food and water, increased vocalisations for guinea pigs, stamping feet in rabbits dirty bottoms,
🐾 Ways to prevent fly strike, give clear out any wet and soiled bedding.
A little care goes a long way in summer. Keep them safe, keep them cool! 🐾💙
