DISTRACTED DOG WALKERS

The distracted dog walker is commonly seen chatting on their phone, wearing headphones or socializing with other people while oblivious to what their dog is doing, how their dog is feeling or what is going on in the environment.

This may not sound like a problem, but it is something that many of us have a problem with, even more so if we have a reactive, sensitive dog.

I always compare walking a dog to driving a car. It’s not so much about our driving skills, but having to constantly be aware of the driving skills of others – trying to predict what they will do, which rules of the road they will ignore and how distracted they are.

Some may say – “but my dog is really friendly, well socialized, gets on well with everyone, is well trained, knows this environment well", however, another dog might not be – maybe they need space, are reactive, sensitive, be an older or young dog.

Walking your dog should be a time of bonding, of connecting, of seeing the environment through the eyes of your dog, of reinforcing and rewarding wanted behaviours, of keeping them safe and protected.

Lets all make sure when out with the doggos we are all giving them the time and attention they deserve.

If anyone walks their dogs around this area please be careful with what your dogs are picking up. This could be any wooded area.. so when out and about please be extra vigilant.

*PLEASE READ*

a member of the public came up to me today to warn me as her wee dog had spent the night in emergency vets and she is worried another dog might get hurt.

the vets suspected it to be cannabis poisoning(not 100% sure, the woman was waiting on test results), but her pup was fighting for its life and if he hadn’t of gotten to the vets when he did he wouldn’t have made it. please be careful and don’t let your dog eat anything off the ground that you aren’t aware of. and if they show any unusual behaviours such as lethargy, unusual balance etc. Acting quickly can save your dogs life.

this happened in the woods around Whitehill just off of Whistleberry Drive. Somewhere that is full of dogs.

if you are a member of the public please try to be aware of what you drop on the ground. thankfully the woman’s dog got to the vets quick enough and is on the mend🤍
