September always brings the annual Sheep Veterinary Society conference, this year attended by Pam in Llandrindod Wells. There were 2 days of lectures on sheep nutrition, interesting cases and the most recent research work, plus an afternoon visit to the Elan Valley. As well as hearing about the management of these upland farms that rely heavily on the use of common land, the 70-strong group of vets visited the farm where Gethin Lewis lives and set the 8 hour sheep shearing new British record this summer.

Congratulations to Ian and co - great achievement.

All 15 of our farm practices are continuing to offer subsidised Bovine Antibody tests this year to assess farm colostrum protocols.

Calves are born without antibodies, key to protection from disease. They must receive enough colostrum at the start of life to supply them with vital antibodies - called passive transfer (PT). Correct colostrum delivery has long-term impacts on production. Calves with good PT scores grew 10% faster and used 46% less antibiotic over their lifetime.

The ImmunIGY test detects antibody levels in calves up to 42 days, where previous tests have only been 7. The simple test takes blood samples via a lancet and results are run in practice using a lateral flow device for a rapid result.

An investigation into the cause of failure of PT are then run by our practices for each farm, looking at nutrition, feed space, housing conditions and dystocia. Our vets then aim to improve PT in future calving seasons by identifying higher risk individuals and discussing management changes.

This will support our farmers productivity, and reduce the risk and incidence of neonatal disease, time and labour treating sick calves, antibiotic treatments, and related lifelong productivity impacts.

Great work by our farm team for the work you are doing to support our farm clients!
