A little belated Birthday mini break to knaresborough courtesy of dad and Karen!

The joyous boiling lamp in the sky limited our plans somewhat but sometimes it’s life’s way of making us rest !
( the boys continue to do a great job of dealing with the heat when I’m panicking like hell over them coping)

Was still lovely to explore new places with the boys and enjoy time away from the hustle and grind! Just meant a few more daft alarms that’s all.

What a joy to spend 48 hours somewhere clean, tidy and peaceful surrounded by courteous people in happy moods ( don’t seem to get that so often these days)

Few reminders seems as though some people still aren’t getting it!

💚🖤 Dog Safety in the Heat 🖤💚

Although Summer is often a welcomed season for us, it can pose serious health risks for dogs!

No matter how much we harp on about it, push the warnings, we continue to see people putting their dogs at risk daily in soaring temperatures.

Dogs don’t sweat like humans and rely mainly on panting to cool down making them vulnerable to overheating and heatstroke.

Not all dogs will make sensible decisions in the heat and humidity so it is our role to protect them.

Please have a read of our latest blog to keep dogs safe and comfortable in hot weather

An interesting post……

HOT WEATHER & AN INCREASE IN BITE RISK 🥵

We've had some very hot weather recently in the UK, and for many parts of the UK- the next three days are going to be scorchio!

It's important to be aware that being too hot can lower thresholds for tolerance and overt reactions- and not just in 'reactive' dogs.

And not just in dogs!

There's a correlation between human riots and an increase in crime during a significant rise in temperature (27 to 32 degrees).
It is well established that in people, heat stress causes irritability and an increased likelihood of aggressive behaviour.

Being hot and bothered is a physical stressor - the body works hard to return to homeostasis.

Cognitive processes can be negatively affected. So if your dog is not responding to as they would normally, consider the effects of heat.

Furthermore- being too hot can interfere with a dog's ability to rest and sleep. During rest and sleep, stress is lowered, and subsequently compromised rest and sleep affects behaviour.

This can affect (lower) the dog's threshold for emotional stress.

🐕 Two unfamiliar dogs meeting while both are hot and bothered is less likely going to result in a healthy interaction. Now is the time to largely keep yourselves to yourselves on walks, or monitor the body language of both dogs very carefully.

🏡 Extra caution should be taken in situations that your dog may struggle with, such as around visitors to the home.

🧒 But the greatest caution of all should be taken around up-close interactions in ALL dogs, especially those who live children.

Remember these basic safeguarding rules;

1. No faces near faces.

2. Let sleeping dogs lie.

3. Do not forcefully take resources (toys, food or anything the dog has found/picked up) off a dog.
Children should never take things off a dog.

4. Do not 'box dogs in' with your interaction.

- Always ensure they can easily move away by not blocking a dog's ability to move forward/away (for example, wrapping your arms around to hug a dog front on makes it near impossible for them to easily disengage).

- The safest way to interact is to invite a dog to come to you.
Alternatively, if you do approach then do so when they are awake and instead of swooping straight in with strokes- wait for them to signal to you they are keen for an interaction.

- Stop stroking after 2-3 seconds, and see if your dog communicates to you they would like more, or if they are done.
This is called the consent test, and it's something all children (and adults) should be aware of.

Most people who get bitten by a dog know the dog well, didn't think their dog would ever bite someone and didn't see the bite coming.

Most dog bites are on faces and hands of someone close to the dog, and this tells us a lot about what the person was LIKELY doing (Note, there are always exceptions).

As I always say to my clients ......

🗣️ Never take your dog's current level of tolerance for granted.

Not sure weekends come much better 🏃‍♀️

An absolute treasure of a weekend at Endure 24 with some outstanding people!

If you’d asked me to run one 5 mile run in 28 degrees I’ve had told you to do one but somehow my body found 30 miles ( bloody proud of the old tree trunks this weekend)

Our team managed to finish 30 out of 994 with 32 laps and that’s down to some serious camaraderie, awesome team strategies, a dream team of support and some bloody old school grit.

We may all be sporting Costa del Sol t**t tans, consumed our body weight in bread, bananas and electrolytes, witnessed new league camping wars, experienced ab cramps ( something I never want to witness again at 2 am) and prob need at least 3 decent sleeps to recover but I’d do it all again!

A character building weekend of the best kind and was awesome to have family and friends on the sidelines to experience it all too!

Here’s to new running friends, new camping friends and pushing your absolute limits!

Oh and did I mention we raised a stack load of cash for MacMillan cancer and my fundraising page is still open ?! 😜

Endure 24 you’ve been a freaking blast!

🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️ Out Of Office On 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

That’s me signing out for the weekend!

Wish me luck!

I may have had a minor melt down before this mini break!

Taking 2 senior bulldogs away in 30 degree heat is not top of my bucket list but preparation is everything!

A van full of fans, air con units, cool mats and cool coats, 4 am alarms to get them out, a change of Cabin to ensure shade and the boys smashed it!

We even managed to get to the beach, the heather moors and Dalby Forest around the heat ( it’s their holiday too so what’s a daft alarm between friends?!)

I’m home, a tad sleepy, but ready to hit another mental work week and Endure 24 next weekend!

Thanks for coming with me last minute ! I can’t imagine it was a relishing prospect at the start but we bossed it!
