Choosing the right dog walker is so much more important than many people realise.
Walking dogs isn’t just about putting a lead on and heading out for an hour. A good dog walker understands canine behaviour, reads body language, recognises stress signals, and knows how to handle different situations safely and confidently.
We need to know when a dog is uncomfortable, overstimulated, nervous, excited, wanting to play, or needing space. We need to understand how to manage reactive dogs around other dogs, recognise signs of food guarding or resource guarding, and know when a dog is reaching its limits before a situation escalates.
Something as simple as a dog refusing to get into transport isn’t always stubbornness it can be fear, anxiety, discomfort, or a previous negative experience. Understanding the reason behind the behaviour is what makes all the difference.
Recently, I’ve had a few dogs come to me with what were described as “behavioural issues.” After spending time with them, it became clear that many of these issues weren’t actually the dogs being difficult they just needed guidance and a confident handler to show them the way and help them.
Dogs are constantly talking to us through their body language. The question is are we listening?
When choosing someone to care for your dog, don’t just look at availability or price. Look for experience, knowledge, understanding, and someone who genuinely takes the time to learn your dog’s individual needs.
Your dog’s safety, wellbeing, and happiness depend on it.
I will always help and will never give up🩷🐾
