Hedgehog First Response Unit, Monmouth including The Prickly Patch

Hedgehog First Response Unit, Monmouth including The Prickly Patch Call the hotline number 01600 605125 if you have found a hedgehog in need of urgent care. FRU RULES:
Please respect our volunteers at all times.

We are not a rescue centre, but have trained volunteers who provide a triage service covering advice, helping secure a rescue space, and support with transport. The Hedgehog Volunteer First Response Volunteer Unit (FRU) in the Monmouthshire area was established following a 6-month pilot project in January 2024. Funded through support from the Wye Valley National Landscape Sustainable Development F

und (a Welsh Government initiative), it aims to address the problem of a lack of available support for injured or poorly hedgehogs that require assistance/care from trained volunteers, rescue centres or wildlife-friendly vets. The hotline number is open 24/7 when volunteers are available, and is a voicemail only system. Please note we are not a rescue centre and do not take hedgehogs in for treatment. We will, where we can, however, give advice and help you find a suitable space at a rescue centre, and help with transportation if necessary. We may not always be available to respond to your call straight away, or at times the service may have to close due to lack of volunteers. In these circumstances, please do not delay in getting the hedgehog the help it needs and contact the rescue centres as detailed in the recorded message. Volunteers may use a withheld number to return your call, so please make sure you can accept calls from withheld numbers. Please do not contact any volunteers directly who you may have spoken to previously as the service is run on a rota basis and they may not be available – it is important to respect their privacy. Please do not visit the homes of volunteers with enquiries or poorly hedgehogs. Please note that for health and safety reasons, volunteers will ask you to bring the poorly hedgehog to them outside and will not enter your home and/or any outbuildings.

A great opportunity to build your own hedgehog house at this free event being run by our friends over at Wye Valley National Landscape in Ross-on-Wye. Perfect timing as we head into the start of hibernation season for our prickly friends 🦔🐾🐾🐾

We're in a really busy time of year now with Autumn Juveniles trying to fend for themselves and short on food & water. These are some photos from a couple of rescues in the last 2 days. As always, we're hopeful for a good outcome, but the one as you will see is really poorly, already has flystrike and probably a broken leg 😥

We can't thank the rehab centres enough for their incredible work and taking these in for us. We know they will always do their very best, and of course what is best for the welfare of the hedgehog.

Please do remember that our service is run solely by volunteers, so it may not always be possible to call you back straight away, especially like today when we're already out on rescues. Thank you for your patience, and for looking out for our prickly friends. Do please keep putting out fresh water daily and some kitten biscuits if you can - food is getting scarce now and these little ones desperately need to start gaining weight for hibernation.

Thank you from the FRU team 💚🦔🐾

Its been a busy week at the FRU (First Response Unit)
Two separate calls about hoglets. Sadly, one was just too poorly and passed on the way to the rescue.
The other was picked up by a dog so is now with a rescue being checked over for puncture wounds.
Its so important to get assistance to the scene asap, every minute really does count & can make the difference between a good rescue or a sad rescue.
If you see a hedgehog out in the day or in distress, contact us or your nearest hedgehog rescue centre as quickly as possible.

THE STORY OF 'BROOK'
This little guy was found out in the daytime on September 2nd, around 6 weeks old, weighing just 149g. He wasn’t expected to survive as he was so poorly. He had 14 ticks removed (more than a few ticks tends to indicate they have an infection) and was so weak he didn't even struggle when our rehab volunteer dealt with flystrike deep inside his ear.

He started to put on a little weight, but then started losing it again. His recovery was a real roller coaster, but with specialist care and dedication, his decline was reversed and now he's been given a clean bill of health! Yesterday, one of our volunteers released Brook back into the wild in Redbrook, where he was originally found, now weighing a very healthy 722g.

Enjoy the wild side Brook 🦔🐾💚

Not all the calls we receive here at FRU result in rescues. This week, for example, we had a call about a nest of 5 hoglets with Mum which had been disturbed. Given the age of the little ones, we felt it was important to give Mum the opportunity to return, so advised the finders to wait and gently monitor. Late in the night, Mum returned and took the hoglets to a different safe space. If Mum hadn’t have returned, then we would of course have rescued the little ones, but this is absolutely the very best result we could have hoped for 🦔🦔🦔

It feels like we're moving into Autumn now which means we're starting to approach hedgehog hibernation. Soon the leaves will be turning & falling onto the ground. Fallen leaves are great for wildlife to forage in & use for hibernation. They're also great for the soil 🦔🦔
