š¾ What Does a Dog Walker Really Do?
Over the next few weeks, Iāll be sharing a few snapshots from my dog walking daysānot just to clear some space on my phone (!), but to show the heart of what this job is really about.
Weāre often booked in because owners are busy, working, or unable to meet their dogās needs that dayāand we really respect the people who recognise that and make wellbeing a priority. That choice matters.
But walking dogs isn't just about getting from A to B.
Our role is to provide enrichment, choice, and freedom of movementāall key ingredients in supporting a dogās emotional and physical health. That means:
Off-lead time wherever safe and possible
Long-line freedom for dogs in training or who canāt yet be off-lead
Harnesses (never collars or slip leads) to protect their body and comfort
Avoiding tools that restrict natural movement, like head collars, during their precious time outdoors
Matching dogs with the right walking buddies
And making sure every walk is about them, not just the clock
We donāt walk dogs shoulder-to-shoulder in tight groups. We donāt aim for miles without meaning. We focus on letting dogs be dogsāsniffing, exploring, connecting, and resetting.
Weāre currently full, but if youāre looking for the right dog walker, Iāve put together a simple checklist in the comments to help you choose someone who prioritises enrichment and wellbeing. There are some brilliant walkers in the area.
Because one hour outside can change a dogās whole day.
