What an incredible, kind-hearted man Michael Sheen is!
The Hollywood actor has wiped £1 million worth of debt for people in south Wales, using £100,000 of his own money to set up a debt acquisition company. His mission? To help 900 people escape the burden of financial hardship.
Sheen’s generosity and determination are highlighted in Michael Sheen’s Secret Million Pound Giveaway, a new Channel 4 documentary airing next Monday, which exposes how banks and finance companies profit from society’s most vulnerable.
This isn’t the first time Sheen has put his money where his heart is. He previously sold his houses to ensure the 2019 Homeless World Cup went ahead in Cardiff and recently pledged to fund a new theatre company in Wales. In 2021, he even declared himself a “not-for-profit” actor, vowing to use his earnings for good causes.
The debt-buying system is complex, but Sheen saw an opportunity to turn it on its head. Instead of companies profiting from people’s struggles, he found a way to buy up debt at a lower cost and write it off completely. The process took two years to complete in secret, and Sheen still doesn’t know the identities of the people he has helped—only that their lives will be a little easier.
At a time when thousands in Port Talbot are facing uncertainty following the closure of the last remaining blast furnace, Sheen’s compassion and action are a reminder of how much difference one person can make.
