Coccidiosis is a major source of scours in spring-born calves and lambs [1][2].

Caused by the protozoa ๐˜Œ๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ข, it attacks the intestinal tract, damaging the cells that line the small and large intestines.

Good colostrum management will provide passive transfer of immunity for the first few weeks of life, but once this wears off, the risk of disease increases.

At what age does this happen and what symptoms do farmers need to watch out for?

Take a look through our slides to find out.

โ€œYou canโ€™t manage crypto by firefighting. You need a whole farm approach and for us, vaccination is an important part of that approach.โ€

Those are the words of Andrew Woodings who, along with his wife Maria, raise a 110-head beef stabiliser herd at Grange Farm near Coalville.

After a severe scour outbreak impacted on calf performance, the Woodings worked with a consultant, and Gualter Graca from Scarsdale Vets, to conduct a whole-farm review.

This resulted in:

๐Ÿฉบ An accurate diagnosis of cryptosporidiosis

๐Ÿงฝ Tightened hygiene with pens steam cleaned and disinfected with a product effective against

The 2025 calving season marked the Woodingsโ€™ first year of vaccinating their herd and the results speak for themselves.

โ€œThere was no evidence of cryptosporidiosis in the calves in 2025,โ€ said Maria.

To put vaccination at the centre of your scour-management plan, speak to your vet.

Are your colostrum protocols putting youngstock at risk? ๐Ÿ„๐Ÿฉบ

A recent report [1] revealed that three-quarters of calves in a seasonal-calving dairy herd received inadequate passive transfer of immunity, despite high-quality colostrum. ๐Ÿผ

The findings support wider research from the Royal Veterinary College [2], which found failure of passive transfer in more than a quarter of calves across 91 UK herds. ๐Ÿ“‰

To avoid issues with passive transfer, the report recommended testing calves for passive transfer and taking a tailored approach to:

๐Ÿ’ช Labour availability for harvesting and feeding transition milk
๐Ÿผ Colostrum supply
๐Ÿ—„๏ธ Storage facilities
๐Ÿ’‰ Vaccine protocols
๐ŸŒฑ Feeding systems

๐Ÿšจ Calf Colostrum Survey 2026 โ€“ Now Extended Until 31 May! ๐Ÿšจ

Good colostrum management plays a vital role in supporting calf health and youngstock performance.

So, to encourage more farmers to share how they feed colostrum, weโ€™re extending the Calf Colostrum Survey 2026.

We want to hear from:

๐Ÿ„ Dairy farmers

๐Ÿ‚ Beef farmers

๐Ÿผ Calf rearers

The survey findings will help shape best practice guidance around collecting, storing, and feeding colostrum, so weโ€™d love to hear from you.

As a thank you, participants will also be entered into a prize draw to win ยฃ100 in Amazon vouchers. The survey only takes a few minutes to complete, and you can find it here ๐Ÿ‘‰http://unbouncepages.com/msd-calf-colostrum-survey/

Not convinced you need to take fly control seriously? ๐Ÿชฐ

Well, here are some headline figures that might surprise you:

One study found that a lack of fly protection cost a 120-cow dairy herd ยฃ8,400 in growth losses over 10 weeks [1].

Another study found an average milk yield drop of 7% per cow in a 120-cow herd, resulting in almost ยฃ1,617 of lost milk revenue over 10 weeks when just 50% of the herd was affected [2].

Summer mastitis costs on average ยฃ386 per case in lost production and treatment [3].

The fact is, failing to control flies can lead to significant financial losses, not to mention welfare issues for your cattle.

With spring well and truly here, NOW is the time to get started.

๐Ÿ‘ Claim your subsidised tests for exposure to toxoplasmosis & enzootic abortion ๐Ÿ‘

Thereโ€™s still time to join MSD Animal Healthโ€™s FlockCheck scheme.

The scheme helps farmers identify potential causes of lamb losses via subsidised testing, provided through veterinary practices.

With last yearโ€™s results revealing 79% of 400 tested flocks had been exposed to Toxoplasma gondii and 35% tested positive for exposure to Chlamydia abortus*, can you afford not to be involved?

To get involved with FlockCheck 2026, speak to your vet before 30 June.

๐Ÿ๐Ÿ„ Coccidiosis โ€“ can you afford an outbreak? ๐Ÿ’€

Coccidiosis in sheep and cattle remains one of the most diagnosed diseases in spring and early summer [1][2].

The economic consequences of a subclinical infection in dairy cattle, from decreased growth rates, reduced liveweight gain, and poor feed efficiency, range from ยฃ24 to ยฃ59 per animal [3].

Up to 10% of lambs die from the condition, with survivors showing varying degrees of weight loss [3].

Effective protection involves:

๐Ÿผ Good colostrum management to create passive immunity

๐Ÿ’Š Anticoccidial treatments.

However, protection strategies must be balanced with some pathogen exposure to enable youngstock to build long-term resistance.

For more information on preventing and managing coccidiosis, speak to your vet.

Sheep farmersโ€ฆ have your say on the pressures affecting your industry ๐Ÿ‘

A survey led by the University of Nottingham and Fiona Lovatt of Flock Health Ltd is seeking to uncover the pressures facing British sheep farmers.

The UK Lambing Survey 2026, which is sponsored by MSD Animal Health and other industry bodies, will also contribute to the Responsible Use of Medicines in Agriculture Targets Task Force report (RUMA TTF), which looks at ways of reducing antibiotic use in livestock farming.

๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸŒพ If youโ€™re a sheep farmer, we would be very grateful if you would spend a few minutes filling it in.

A link to the survey can be found in the comments below.

The findings will be used to help businesses and industry bodies that support the sheep sector better meet farmer expectations.

They will also help reduce antibiotic use without compromising on animal health and welfare.

The survey closes on 30 June.
