🧡🍫🧡 Chocolate poisoning🧡🍫🧡

Its estimated that in 2023, the UK's population of approximately 67 million, consumed approximately 536,000 tonnes!

However dogs should not eat chocolate. If your dog has accidently got hold of some, their risk will depend on their weight, the type of chocolate and the amount they have eaten.

⚠️Signs of chocolate poisoning in dogs⚠️

If your dog has eaten chocolate, speak to your vet so they can assess your dog's risk of chocolate poisoning. Symptoms of chocolate poisoning can develop even if your dog has only eaten small amounts, and include:

vomiting
diarrhoea
hyperactivity
tremors, seizures or fits
heart problems
death, in severe cases

Remember, the darker the chocolate, the higher the level of theobromine, and therefore the more toxic it is!

🍫☢️🐰🌻Easter Safety Tips for your Pets 🍫☢️🐰🌻

It's Easter Bank Holiday weekend and fingers crossed the weather is perfect ☀️
But it could all be ruined by your perfect pooch sniffing out all the Easter eggs or you feisty feline getting into the hot cross buns...

❤️‍🩹 Why can’t my dog or cat eat chocolate?
Chocolate is poisonous to pets as it contains caffeine which increases heart rate, and an ingredient called theobromine, which is naturally metabolised in the human body, but not in cats or dogs. This leads to a toxic build-up of the substance, resulting in some very serious symptoms, particularly liver failure.

Although chocolate is also bad for cats and rabbits, they’re less likely to eat it as they can’t taste the sweetness. Your cat is more likely to be interested in playing with the wrapper than the chocolate itself

🤢How much chocolate does it take to make a dog sick
You should never feed your dog ANY chocolate. However, accidents do happen.
While there is no right or wrong answer to this, usually, the amount of chocolate a dog can tolerate will depend on:
How much they’ve eaten
How old they are
How large they are
How pure the chocolate was

Please contact us as soon as possible for advice!

😷Symptoms of dog chocolate poisoning include:
Vomiting and/or diarrhoea
Restlessness
Increased thirst or urination
High temperature and blood pressure
Lethargy
Tremors
Elevated or abnormal heart rate
Seizures
Collapse

💐What plants are poisonous to cats and dogs:
Lilies
Daffodils
Fruit and vegetable plants

If you’re ever worried your cat or dog has ingested anything poisonous or toxic you can always phone the practice. If you can, make a note of what they’ve eaten, when and how much and try to remain as calm as possible around your pet 🧡

🧡 How does the Dangerous Dogs Act affect my dog? 🧡

Whether you own a large dog or a miniature breed, and however calm and friendly your dog is, the Dangerous Dogs Act still applies to you!!!

⚠ Under the Act, it's illegal for a dog to be 'out of control' or to bite or attack someone. The legislation also makes it an offence if a person is worried or afraid (the term is 'reasonable apprehension') that a dog may bite them. So it's important to ensure that your dog is kept under control at all times and in all places.

🐶 All dog owners should be responsible for their dogs behaviour around people, other dogs and other animals.

Since 1991 it has been illegal for dogs to be 'out of control in a public place'. In 2014 the law was amended to include incidents on private property - so inside your home and others' homes, including front and back gardens.

🐶 Your dog is considered dangerously out of control if it:
Injures someone
Makes someone worried that it might injure them

🐶 A court could also decide that your dog is dangerously out of control if either of the following apply:
It attacks someone’s animal
The owner of an animal thinks they could be injured if they tried to stop your dog attacking their animal

A farmer is allowed to kill your dog if it’s worrying their livestock!

⚠ Penalties ⚠

If a dog is deemed to be “dangerously out of control” then you, the owner, could face a fine of up to £5000, a jail sentence of up to six months, and a ban on future dog ownership. The dog may also be put to sleep and you may be ordered to pay the veterinary bills of the other dog.

If a dog is allowed to injure a guide dog, the owner can be sentenced to up to three years in jail and fined. Civil proceedings can also be taken against the owner of a dog that’s dangerous and not kept under proper control

🧡 It is always better to be safe than sorry. If you do not have a reliable recall, keep your dog on a lead!

As dog owners it is important to be acquainted with the law, not only including the Dangerous Dog Act but in regards to Microchipping, Welfare and Traveling.

🧡🐹🧡🐹🧡World Hamster Day🧡🐹🧡🐹🧡

Show your pet hamster how much you love them with a special treat and some extra attention.

Did you know????

- There are 24 different species of hamster worldwide, and they come in a range of sizes too. Can you imagine a hamster 34 centimeters long? Well, that’s how large the biggest species, the European hamster, can grow! Generally speaking, however, they’re pretty small animals – short, stumpy and extra cuddly, with the long-haired variant even referred to as ‘Teddy Bear’.

- “Hamster,” from the German word “hamstern,” means “hoard,” which is exactly what our lovely little rodent friends do. Their cheek pouches are used for storing and carrying food, which they then hide away in their burrows. Sometimes, however, they do have eyes too big for their stomachs (or rather cheeks), with their pouches expanding in size so much that they’re unable to squeeze through the entrance of their hamster house or tunnel!

- They’re crepuscular (meaning most active at dawn and dusk) and by and large solitary creatures, although they are prolific breeders. Hamsters are also very curious animals and so any cages for pet hamsters need to be robust and escape-proof!

🛻You must have your own transport and be happy to either drive up our track or walk up. We are based in Sutton, nr Haverfordwest.
👱‍♂️👱‍♀️You need to be over 18 and happy to work Independently and on your own once training is completed..." (Ginny) ☺️

“Why is your dog wearing a muzzle?”

A question we love to answer! 🙂

Too many people still assume a muzzled dog is dangerous. That it’s aggressive. That the human on the other end of the lead has failed. But the truth? That muzzle is often the result of love, training, and responsibility.

🐾 Some dogs are muzzle trained because they get overwhelmed in busy environments.

🐾 Some wear one at the vet… because they’re in pain, and pain makes behaviour unpredictable.

🐾 Some have a history of trauma or reactivity, and a muzzle gives them safe access to the world.

🐾 Others have a habit of scavenging… things like chicken bones, trash, or even medications left on the ground.

🐾 And for many, it’s just about being prepared. Emergency situations happen fast, and a muzzle trained dog is safer to handle when things go wrong.

Pain, fear, stress, overstimulation… these are real, valid reasons a dog might struggle. A muzzle doesn’t mean they’re a threat. It means they’re protected.

The more we educate, the more we create empathy. 💕

The more we normalise muzzles, the more we protect dogs from judgment… and from situations that could cost them their lives. 💕

We muzzle because we care. Let’s start changing the question from “What’s wrong with that dog?” to “How can I learn more?”

Who is with us?

🐶⚠🐶 Microchipping your dog ⚠🐶⚠

🐾 Are your pet’s microchip details up to date? If your dog or cat’s microchip registration is NOT holding your correct contact information then they are unlikely to be reunited with you should they go missing.

🐾 Over 40% of vets couldn’t reunite stray pets with their owners due to incorrect contact details on the microchip database.

🐾 The Law and Microchipping – Please note that every dog MUST be microchipped in the UK and registered on one of the authorised commercial databases as well as wearing a dog tag in public. It is not a legal requirement for cats to be microchipped in Wales but it is in England.

🐾 You can be fined if your dog is not microchipped and if the contact details are not up to date. For more information go to ---> https://www.gov.uk/get-your-dog-microchipped

🐾 If you do not know your dogs microchip database or the number then we can scan them in practice and point you in the right direction to make sure the details are up to date 😁
