Riding Simulator by Lucy McWilliam

Riding Simulator by Lucy McWilliam Riding Simulator Lessons I've always found it challenging to describe myself, but I've come to realise that it's whats make me good at what i do.

My passion for teaching is driven by moments with horses that resonate with me. There are times when we both struggle to understand each other, and moments when we move as one, creating an incredible bond. My journey with horses began as a working pupil in London's East End. L had various instructors, but one stood out. She believed in me, placing me on a skilled dressage horse, despite doubts fro

m others. She whispered 'Listen and he will teach you' and he did. I aspired to be an instructor who understood that riding is more than just commands; it's about the relationship between horse and rider. My path with Simulators started when i was asked to teach on one. I learned from scratch, realising that the simulators could unlock a deeper understanding of riding. I transitioned from instructor to coach, creating an environment where riders and horses, be they plastic or real can be present in the moment. My goal is for everyone to leave with the confidence and tools for their own unique equine journey. Even tiny improvements can make a huge difference to horse and rider.

There are many ways to learn to ride.
Different doesn’t mean wrong.
How you understand something may be nonsense to someone else. That’s ok.
If you think about riding in a scientific way, great. If you don’t but can achieve the same with feel then maybe you have a talent that others can’t understand.
Do you need both, yes but both isn’t the same for everyone and it’s important to remember that different doesn’t mean not good enough.
The simulator is a great starting point to help you figure out your learning style.
Riding has many elements. A major part is the communication with the horse. if you want to understand what you bring to the conversation and how you respond to the horse then book a lesson today.
The Simulator will walk if you ask for walk but will trot if your aids are too strong.
The Simulator will go from trot to walk if you ask but will halt if your aids are too strong.
With leg and rein sensors the Simulator will only respond in the way the rider asks.

Little small business shout out! This is the dog shop next to Roo they are launching the Christmas range today. Both my dogs can vouch for the products. It’s hard running a small business these days a little support goes a long way.

November marks 16 years since I brought my first Simulator ‘Barney’
Having taught on other simulators previously.
Never could I of imagined what a journey it was going to take me on.
I’ve taught every type of rider you can think of from Stunt riders, Western, Dressage at every level, Eventers, Show jumpers, Happy hackers, complete beginners, Instructors, Judges and so many more.
I have learnt so much about riding, people, and developed an even greater appreciation for how amazing horses truly are.
I often wonder if I would still be working in the equine industry if I hadn’t come across the simulators and I don’t know if I would it has it’s toxic ways and I never quite fitted the mould. I had to think outside the box when I first got Barney, the simulators didn’t have the profile they have now. I had to find a way to blend the two, real horses and robots. It works if the rider is willing to put the work in.
I always wanted to create an environment where people felt comfortable where it didn’t matter what your background was or how you think you should ride but somewhere you could see if there was a way that worked for you.
It’s impossible to get it right all the time a lesson we should all learn in many different formats.
I love my job not the running the business part but the light bulb moments, watching self belief grow, nuturing talent that’s just been misunderstood. Someone said to me last week I really like that it’s not stuffy here it feels relaxing. Mission accomplished!

It’s not always about the red dot! I was going to write about this as people regularly ask me how I do what I do. Nicky has explained it perfectly. The data helps but it isn’t the only part. Having had two Simulators now one with a screen and one without I can say with full confidence that eyes on the ground and feedback from the rider are an integral part of the experience. The data is a guide it offers a chance to see that maybe what you feel and what someone sees aren’t always aligned. A voice for the horse if you like. A combination of all three is when the magic really happens.

Lesson for two!

Did you know you can book a shared lesson?
These are some of my favourite to teach.
Sometimes you can see the difference in someone else before you can feel it yourself.
Take it in turns to ride the simulator, sharing feedback along the way.
You don’t have to be the same ability the lesson will be tailored to suit both your needs.

Lessons can either be
60 Minutes £60.00
90 Minutes £90.00

“This feels weird”

It’s not about it feeling real. It’s about creating a tool box. Something you can go back to in different moments for different things.
The idea that one way suits all is restricting and sets us up for failure before we have even started.
The simulator won’t feel the same as the last horse you rode. All horses feel different in fact the same horse can feel different on the same day.
The simulator isn’t real it doesn’t have a personality and it definitely doesn’t have legs.
Ride it like it’s not real that’s the secret.
It’s a training aid to allow you as a rider to try different things, to understand how you react in different situations and to understand what if any effect that will be having on your horse.
As a rider the more you learn to adapt, to absorb the movement and to be in the moment the more realistic the simulator will feel.
I can teach the same lesson in many different ways constantly changing and adapting to the client. Factoring personality, past experiences, future goals, physical restrictions and sometimes and I would say most significant the mindset that rider is in that day.
Riding the simulator isn’t the same as riding a real horse, teaching on the simulator isn’t the same as teaching on a real horse. I know, I have worked with real horses for over 25 years and have been teaching on the simulators for 18. They complement each other for sure. There is nothing I would teach on the simulator that I wouldn’t on a real horse but the process is different sometimes easier, sometimes harder.
The horse will absorb so much of what’s going on. The simulator will reflect back what you put in without filter.
To understand riding is to understand the rider. If you would like to take a closer look at what you do without having to think about the horse. Book a lesson today go to www.lucymcwilliam.com
