☀️🐾 HEATSTROKE IN DOGS: KNOW THE SIGNS, ACT FAST! 🐾☀️
As temperatures rise, heatstroke can become a life-threatening emergency for dogs. The good news? Quick action can save lives.
🚨 EARLY WARNING SIGNS
• Excessive panting
• Drooling
• Bright red gums or tongue
• Restlessness or agitation
• Vomiting or diarrhoea
• Weakness or wobbliness
🚨 EMERGENCY SIGNS
• Collapse
• Confusion
• Seizures
• Unresponsiveness
❗ WHAT TO DO IF YOU SUSPECT HEATSTROKE
Remember: COOL FIRST, TRANSPORT SECOND
✅ Move your dog to a cool, shaded, well-ventilated area.
✅ Start cooling immediately:
• Pour cool (not ice-cold) water over their body.
• Use a fan or air conditioning to increase airflow.
• Continue cooling during transport to the vet.
✅ Offer small amounts of water if your dog is alert and able to drink.
❌ DO NOT:
• Use ice baths or ice packs directly on the body.
• Cover your dog with wet towels (they can trap heat).
• Wait to see if your dog improves on their own.
🐶 WHICH DOGS ARE MOST AT RISK?
• Flat-faced breeds (French Bulldogs, Pugs, Bulldogs)
• Overweight dogs
• Senior dogs
• Dogs with heart or breathing problems
• Any dog exercising in warm, humid weather
🌡️ PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN TREATMENT
• Walk early morning or late evening.
• Always provide access to shade and fresh water.
• Avoid strenuous exercise in hot weather.
• Never leave your dog in a parked car—even for a few minutes.
Heatstroke can cause serious organ damage and can be fatal. If you think your dog may be overheating, contact your vet immediately.
