A scam warning from Wiltshire Bobby Van Trust...
WEB SAFE WEDNESDAY: KLARNA SCAM
Every week we'll post some useful advice from our Stay Safe Online team to help you keep one step ahead of online scammers. Please share it with anyone you know who might benefit.
This week we're passing on a warning from the Regional Organised Crime Unit about scam phone calls to people who use the shopping payment app Klarna.
Customers have been getting calls claiming to be from the company saying there has been suspicious activity on their account and asking them to pass on an activation code so they can 'secure' their account. This then gives them access and allows them to make fraudulent purchases.
One person who fell for the trick said: "Had this happen today and I stupidly fell for it as the code was actually sent by Klarna on WhatsApp! I'm so angry as I started to even say 'I'm not sure of this' but the fact the message actually came from Klarna threw me and I got done."
Klarna will never call you to ask for your one-time code, password, or other personal details. If you receive a call, end it immediately and use the report feature within the Klarna app or visit the official Klarna website to report the attempt.
If you are worried about yours or a relative or neighbour's cyber security, our team of highly skilled, police-trained, volunteers carry out free home visits or group talks to anyone over 60, or over 18 if they have a registered disability.
During their visits our experts' easy to follow guidance can help improve your digital/cyber security awareness, offer cyber and scam prevention advice, signpost you to further advice and resources, provide support and reassurance and offer basic practical skills to enable you to check and understand privacy settings.
