NEVER HAD I KNOWN SUCH A DETERMINED PAIR OF SWANS. I WILL TELL THEIR FINAL YEAR, WATCH FOR IT SOON.

I had carried dying Mildred of Ebley Mill and frequently Frome Gardens, terminally injured by a dog on the bank of the River Frome, to a comfortable blanket for her final journey to the Vale Wildlife hospital. She'd sat for 41 days trying to incubate her last egg before deserting it. Her mate George had searched for her sadly for weeks.

Splendid, Sybil and their surviving 3 cygnets cygnets were this morning terrorised by dogs off leads on the tow path near Nutshell Bridge around 9.30 am. This was witnessed by 2 of the experienced swan support team who feed and observe the family.

In nesting season 2024 two of Stroud's then 9 swans lost their lives due to uncontrolled dogs ( ie off leads) , both on the local waters, 1 a bite! 1 the vicious attack as pictured that had caused Mildred brain damage! She had been shook!

What more is it going to take before dog owners are made to obey the law to leash their dogs along the tow path, for the law to be policed, and fines to be issued!

Dog owners need to be reminded of the law! Keep your dogs controlled & on leads on the entire Stroud Canal Towpath. There is a fine if the law is ignored. Also keep them out of water where you see wild life, this includes swans! Too often this is seen on the canal!
