Work truly is my happy place. If the doggos are happy, I am happy 😌 and with all those happy tail wags, I'm pretty sure my mission was accomplished this week!

Another successful week with the D.A.D gang. With another hot spell, some walks were cancelled this week to keep the D.A.D gang safe. But with summer almost over, we have some old and new faces returning soon! The gang can't wait!

Not just a hobby, it's care, welfare and responsibility. Very well put 🙌

One thing I wish more people understood about professional pet care.....

It isn't just walking a dog, feeding a cat or popping in on a pet.

It's Care. Welfare. Responsibility.

Right now, I'm looking after a cat who hasn't shown himself for two days. He's eating, his owners are aware and, while naturally concerned, they're not in a mad panic and think he's probably found somewhere cool to hide.

But is that stopping me thinking about him?

Absolutely bloody not. 😂

So I'm making extra visits at different times because I want eyes on him.

I'm also caring for another cat who isn't quite themselves. Their owners have a vet appointment booked, but I'm monitoring them closely and making sure we have a plan in place if anything changes.

And that's alongside walks, drop-ins and house sitting - including an overnight with a dog who needs careful management around other dogs and the heat.

Because that's what you're paying for.

Not just the time on the clock.

You're paying for someone who notices.

Someone who monitors.

Someone who adapts.

Someone who has a plan when things don't go quite right.

Someone who genuinely cares about your family when you're not there.

There is a whole business behind the person who turns up at your door.

Insurance. Training. Admin. Planning. Equipment. Vehicles. Risk assessments. Emergency plans. Early mornings. Late nights.

And yes, we still need to make a living.

We still have bills to pay.
We still need time off.
We still need to plan for the days we're ill.
And we still need to make a profit if we're going to keep doing this long term.

I absolutely bloody love what I do.

But loving animals doesn't make it a hobby.

It's a proper job.

And when it's done properly, it's so much more than a walk, a feed, a drop-in or a night in someone's home.

It's knowing that when you leave your family with me, I'm not just ticking a box and moving on to the next visit.

I'm thinking about them.

I'm watching them.

I'm caring for them.

Because they're not just another booking in my diary.

They're someone's family. ❤️🐾

That's what you pay for.

With more of us encouraging our dogs into the water to keep cool, safety first!

🔶 A Long Line Could Save Your Dog’s Life 🔶

Many people use a long line for training or recall, but it can also be one of the simplest pieces of safety equipment around water.

If your dog enjoys swimming, keeping them attached to a long line means you have a chance of pulling them back to shore if they suddenly get into difficulty. Dogs can tire quickly, panic, cramp, or become unwell without warning.

Sadly, hundreds of dogs drown in the UK every year. Some breeds, including brachycephalic breeds such as Bulldogs, are at particularly high risk, but any dog can get into trouble in the water.

A few important tips:
Use a properly fitted life jacket, especially for dogs that aren’t strong swimmers.
Use a long line as a lifeline.
Never attach the line to a collar – always use a well-fitted harness to reduce the risk of injury.
Keep hold of the line and avoid letting it wrap around people, rocks or branches.
Stay close enough that you can react quickly if your dog needs help.

We recently spent time training with the amazing team at Beneath the Surface, who recover dogs from water. One message they repeatedly reinforced was that prevention saves lives.

A long line won’t prevent every accident, but it could give you those precious seconds needed to bring your dog safely back to shore. Please also note there will be circumstances where a long line could catch on something in water. This information should be used sensibly. There are other options we have highlighted previously (life jackets being one).
