Please be aware of the following
Bird feeders add life and colour to our gardens, attracting a variety of feathered visitors. However, these same feeders can pose a risk to one of our other garden friends: the hedgehog. While hedgehogs are naturally curious and may be tempted to forage around bird feeding areas, certain bird-feed ingredients can harm them. Knowing how to prevent hedgehogs from accessing bird feed is key to keeping them safe and well.
Hedgehogs are opportunistic feeders, and in their quest for food, they may eat whatever they find on the ground. Unfortunately, some common ingredients in bird feed can upset their delicate digestive systems and even pose long-term health risks.
Nuts and seeds in many bird feeds may seem harmless, but they can be problematic for hedgehogs. Hedgehogs’ teeth aren’t well-suited to breaking down hard seeds, which can lead to issues with digestion. Larger nuts also present a choking hazard, particularly for young or smaller hedgehogs. Over time, consuming too many seeds or nuts may contribute to blockages within their digestive systems, leading to serious health complications.
While dried fruit is a popular addition to bird feed, it’s not suitable for hedgehogs. The sugar content in dried fruits, such as raisins and sultanas, is far higher than hedgehogs would naturally consume. This can cause rapid weight gain and, in some cases, lead to liver and kidney problems. Additionally, dried fruits can swell when ingested, potentially causing uncomfortable and harmful blockages for hedgehogs.
