🐾 Keep Your Pet Safe: The Power of Microchipping 🐾

Did you know that thousands of pets are lost every year, and many never make it back home? 💔 Microchipping your pet is the best way to ensure they have the best chance of being identified and reunited with you, should they get lost or stolen.

Why microchip? 🐶🐱

✅For cats and dogs, microchipping is a legal requirement.
✅ Unlike collars and tags, which can be removed or get caught, a microchip is permanent and effective.
✅ The process of administering a microchip is quick and simple
✅ Each microchip holds a unique code, linked to your contact details in a national database (like PetLog), so if your pet is found, you’ll be contacted right away.

✅ But remember: Always keep your contact details up to date! If you move or change your phone number, update the database so your pet's chip will lead back to you 🏡📞

Unsure what company your pet's microchip is registered with? Give us a ring and pop them down to the practice and we can check that for you!

🌊 Choosing the Perfect Doggy Dip Spot🐾

🔥 Safe Spots for Dog Swims:

💦Lakes
💦Dog-friendly beaches
💦Slow-moving rivers
💦 Pools & paddling pools

⚠️ What to Avoid:

❌ Canals: Often stagnant and full of debris
❌ Reservoirs: Hidden currents, cold depths, and dangerous undertows
❌ Fast-flowing or flooded rivers: Strong currents and floating debris make these a big no no!
❌ Rough seas: Big waves and strong currents spell danger, wait for calm conditions.

🚨 Stay Disease-Savvy:

🦠 Leptospirosis: Spread through contaminated water. Keep your dog’s vaccinations up to date

🦠 Blue‑green algae (cyanobacteria): Toxic blooms in stagnant water can be life-threatening. Look out for green/blue scum or foam, rinse them off if exposed, and call your vet!

☀️ 🐶 Choose safe, supervised places, stay aware of water quality, and keep vaccinations current. That way, your pup can paddle happily and you can relax knowing they're safe! 🌞🐶

📸 Let’s see your photos of your furry friends enjoying the water 💦

🐰✨ 5 Easy Ways to Improve Your Rabbit’s Diet! ✨🐰

1️⃣ Choose High-Quality Feeding Hay
Not all hay is equal! Opt for fresh, fragrant strands grown for feeding instead of bedding hay 🌾

2️⃣ Place Hay Where They Love to Chill
Rabbits love to snack while resting or using their litter tray. Pop some hay in a racks around their housing area. Easy access = more nibbling! 🐇

3️⃣ Turn Hay into a Toy!
Rabbits love to explore and chew, so turn feeding hay into a fun activity!
🎲 Fill a cardboard tube or willow ball with hay and let them toss, nibble, and pull it apart.
🎁 For extra fun, wrap hay and herbs in brown paper and twist the ends - like a little cracker surprise! It’s a toy and a treat in one.

4️⃣ Add a Tasty Garnish
Mix hay with their fave goodies! Sprinkle in their nuggets or dried herbs to encourage foraging and increase hay intake 🌸🥬

5️⃣ Ditch the Muesli Mix
Muesli diets can lead to picky eating and lower hay consumption. Stick to quality nuggets and hay for a balanced diet 🚫🥣

🧺🐰 Did you know? 85-90% of a rabbit’s diet should be hay!

Hay and fresh grass aren’t just snacks - they’re essential for your bunny’s overall health and happiness 💚

Here’s why:

🌿 Dental health - Hay helps wear down their teeth, preventing painful dental issues.
🌿 Digestive health - Fibre keeps their gut moving, reducing the risk of gut stasis and bloat.
🌿 Behavioural health - Rabbits naturally forage for up to 70% of their day. Constant access to hay lets them express this instinct and reduces stress or boredom.

Keep those hay racks full and grassy spots growing! Your bunny will thank you 🐇💚

🚫🐰 This Rabbit Awareness Week - Say NO to Muesli Mixes for Rabbits! 🐇🥣

Did you know that feeding your rabbit a muesli-style diet can be harmful to their health? Rabbits tend to selectively feed, picking out the sugary, starchy bits and leaving behind the nutritious pellets. This might seem cute but it can lead to serious health issues, including:

⚠️ Dental disease
⚠️ Gut stasis & digestive problems
⚠️ Fly strike - Muesli diets have been proven to decrease caecotroph ingestion leading to soiled fur!
⚠️ Low fibre intake
⚠️ Reduced water intake - increasing the risk of urinary tract problems such
as sludge, stones, blockages, cystitis and scalding.

Pellets are packed with essential fibre, vitamins, and minerals that keep your bunny's teeth, tummy, and overall health in check 🥕💚

👉 Switch to a high-fibre pellet diet and plenty of fresh hay to keep your rabbit healthy and hoppy!

So with it being the last weekend at home before we head to London to get our flight to Grenada SPCA Animal Shelter for our charity volunteering stint, we thought it may be a good idea to see how much suitcase space all the medications that we have collected together take up. These medications have kindly been donated by Derwent Valley Vets, Black Sheep Vets, and East Lincs Emergency Vets to be used by vets at the GSPCA centre.

I'm thinking we are going to need a bigger suitcase as once my surgical scrubs go in I don't think there is going to be much room for anything else! 🤣🤣🤣

Luckily, we are able to take a suitcase each and one of us (and it's not me) is a super skinny 16 year old who thinks one pair of shorts, three tiny t-shirts and 5 bikinis will suffice for a two week trip! 👙👙👙👙👙
I just have to break it to her some of her 20 bottle skin care regime may have to stay behind 🤣🤣🤣

Our Just Giving link is still active so if anyone wishes to contribute but has not yet had the chance just follow the link below.

All donations will directly go towards providing food and medicines for those animals being helped by Grenada SPCA Animal Shelter.

We are very much looking forward to our trip and will post about it while we are there so everyone can see where their money is being spent.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts💕

🌞🐰 Hot Weather Warning for Small Pets! 🐭☀️

With temperatures set to soar today and tomorrow, it's important to remember that small pets like rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, and rats can overheat quickly. Here are some simple steps to help keep your furry companions safe and cool:

🚫 No Direct Sunlight
- Never place your pet’s enclosure where it sits in full sun.
- Whether they’re indoors or outside, always ensure they’re kept in shaded, well-ventilated areas.
- Indoors, draw the curtains.
- Outdoors, use a sun umbrella, awning, or natural shade from trees and shrubs.

💧 Keep Them Hydrated
- Fresh, clean water is a must! Provide multiple bowls or bottles around their space so they can drink where and when they feel like it.
- Try soaking leafy greens in cold water before feeding them to boost hydration.
- Don’t forget to check and change their water frequently as the heat can quickly warm it up.

🏠 Be Mindful of Their Hideouts
- Plastic hidey-houses can trap heat. Instead, opt for breathable shelters like wooden huts, tunnels and hay to burrow in.
- Bonus tip: you can also pop ceramic tiles into their space for extra cooling.

🍏 Hydrating Treats
- Gradually introduce your pets to moisture-rich snacks like cucumber, celery, and apple (in moderation).
- For an extra chill factor, store them in the fridge before serving - they’ll love the refreshing crunch!

🚨 Heatstroke in Dogs: Know the Warning Signs & What to Do 🚨

Heatstroke is a very serious condition that can progress quickly and in severe cases, it can lead to seizures, organ failure and can even be fatal.

Most cases happen during exercise, but it can also occur if a dog is trapped in a hot space (like a car) or even just sitting somewhere warm for too long.

⚠️ Warning Signs:
• Heavy panting or difficulty breathing
• Excessive drooling
• Lethargy, drowsiness, or uncoordinated movements
• Collapse or vomiting

🚑 What to Do:
• Move your dog to shade
• Gently pour cool water over their body - avoiding their head/mouth to prevent aspiration
• Create a breeze with a fan or open windows
• Offer small sips of cool water
• Don’t cover them with wet towels - this traps heat
• If unconscious, urgent cooling is critical
• Give us a call and head down to the practice, even if they seem to feel better

🐶 Flat-faced breeds, seniors, puppies, and dogs with thick coats or health issues are most at risk.

This week we have been adding to our collective knowledge.

As Vets and Veterinary Nurses it is a requirement for us to do continued learning even after we are qualified. Vets must be do a minimum of 35 hours study a year and nurses a minimum of 15 hours a year to remain on the RCVS register.

A lot of our team do much more than that.

At DVV we think it is SO important that we continue to add to what we know year after year to keep up to date with new advances in treatment and how to use ever advancing bits of kit.

A big "Thank You" to our head nurse Emma for arranging for Celtic SMR to come out to the practice this week to help us all perfect our dental radiography skills 🦷🩻

We are all now that little bit more educated than we were last week 🧠🤯💙

🐶☀️ Is it too hot to walk your dog?

With the summer heat kicking in, it's crucial to keep your pup safe. Most dogs are comfy between 15–20°C, but once temps rise, the risk of overheating does too — especially for:

🔸 Flat-faced breeds (like Pugs & Frenchies)
🔸 Overweight dogs
🔸 Seniors (8+ years)
🔸 Puppies (
