💚 May is Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month 💚
So we thought we’d take the time to go into more detail about the role of a veterinary nurse and put our nurses in the spotlight.
A veterinary nurse is a highly skilled member of the veterinary team, they look after your pets with care and empathy every day.
Veterinary nurses perform a wide range of important duties within the practice…
💚 Reception; answering phones, booking appointments, greeting clients, advising clients and taking payments.
💚 Admitting and Discharging patients
💚 Nurse appointments; post op checks, nail clips, tick removal, administering medication, dental checks, puppy/kitten checks and weight clinics.
💚 Pharmacist; administering, dispensing, recording, restocking.
💚 Phlebotomist; placing IV cannulas and taking blood samples.
💚 Laboratory; running samples (blood, urine, skin/hair) and preparing samples for external testing.
💚 Radiographer; positioning patients for x-rays, considering radiation safety, processing x-rays and calculating x-ray settings.
💚 Anaesthetist; calculating premedication and induction doses, preparing the patient for surgery, calculating gas flow rates, maintaining the anaesthetic machine and circuits, monitoring patients vitals under anaesthetic and monitoring recovery of the patient.
💚 Ward nurse; nursing patients, checking vitals, administering medications, calculating and administering fluid therapy, feeding, pain management, wound management and general TLC.
💚 And much more, while cuddling puppies and kittens is definitely a perk of the job unfortunately it’s not all a veterinary nurse does.
