𝐁𝐎𝐀𝐒 𝐒𝐔𝐑𝐆𝐄𝐘
*warning of surgical photos*

Hugo stayed with us for the day recently to have some special surgery, visiting surgeon David came out and performed BOAS surgery.

Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) surgery is an operation that improves a dog’s breathing by removing the excess tissue that restricts airflow. In doing this we hope to correct anatomical abnormalities caused by the dog’s shorten skull and snout.

While BOAS mainly affects the respiratory system it can have widespread implications of other body systems.

We are very pleased to report Hugo’s surgery was successful and following post op checks his owners are already seeing improvements in him. The last photo shows just how happy he is 🥰

Signs of dental disease:

🦷 Bad breath
🦷 Difficulty eating or chewing
🦷 Redness or swollen gums
🦷 Dropping food
🦷 Excessive drooling
🦷 Rubbing or pawing at face
🦷 Plaque or tartar build up
🦷 Tooth discolouration
🦷 Bleeding from mouth or gums
🦷 Loose or broken teeth

Why is dental care important?

🪥 Pain/discomfort will make it difficult for your pet to eat and drink or play and groom
🪥 Bacteria from the buildup of plaque and tartar can lead to gum inflammation and infection
🪥 When left untreated bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream and affect the kidneys, liver and heart
🪥 Reduce your pets quality of life, dental disease can affect appetite, energy levels and overall wellbeing

How can we help your pet?

✅ Book a dental check appointment and we can advise you if your pet would benefit from dental work
✅ Ask us how you can care for your pets teeth at home
✅ We can demonstrate ways to help care for your pets teeth and recommend approved dental products

We advise using dental products that are sealed with the stamp of approval from the Veterinary Oral Health Council (See last photo for example of the seal).

You can also access their website for a full list of all accepted dental products https://vohc.org/accepted-products/

𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐒𝐒 𝐒𝐄𝐄𝐃𝐒 𝗼𝐫 𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐒𝐒 𝐀𝐖𝐍𝐒

Over the last few weeks we have removed these pesky things from eyes, ears and paws!

🌾 Grass seeds, most commonly found in ears and paws especially in pets with long fur after being walked in areas with long grass. They sometimes go into eyes or up noses.

Signs of a grass seed issue can vary depending on the affected area, but may include excessive licking/chewing or scratching of the area, swelling, limping, head shaking, sudden or violent consistent sneezing.

Check your pet each time they come indoors and remove any seeds that you can see that have not yet pierced the skin.

☎️ If you are concerned your pet may have a grass seed stuck call us and book an appointment.

We’re set for a hot weekend 🥵

☀️ 𝓗𝓮𝓵𝓵𝓸 𝓼𝓾𝓷𝓼𝓱𝓲𝓷𝓮 ☀️

With the weather set to be getting warmer we wanted to take a moment to remind you of some potential dangers it may bring. Starting with…

❌𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝗼𝐤𝐞❌

Heat stroke can be an extremely dangerous condition when your pets body temperature becomes too high.
Unfortunately heat stroke becomes more dangerous the longer it goes on, the quicker you are able to take action and seek veterinary treatment the better their chance of a full recovery.

Heat stroke poses a risk to all animals, those at a higher risk include brachycephalic breeds (short-nosed), long haired or thick coated breeds, younger and older pets and pets that are overweight.

𝐒𝐲𝗺𝐩𝐭𝗼𝗺𝐬*

Excessive panting or difficulty breathing
Excessive drooling or foaming at the mouth
Vomiting
Diarrhoea
Bring red gums or very pale gums
Shaking
Lethargy
Limb weakness or collapsing
Confusion
Seizures

𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝗼𝐧*

Walk during the coolest times of the day
Provide access to shade and fresh water
Check the surface temperature of the ground (If you can comfortably place your hand on it for 7 seconds it’s ok, be mindful of sand, artificial grass and tarmac as these get especially hot)
Never leave your pet in a hot car
Consider a summer trim

❌ 𝐈𝐛𝐮𝐩𝐫𝗼𝐟𝐞𝐧 ❌

We are aware of videos circulating on social media at the moment advising to give ibuprofen to dogs.

Please do NOT believe everything you see on social media. Dogs are very sensitive to ibuprofen and ingestion of even a small amount can cause adverse effects on their stomach and kidneys. A large overdose can cause a rapid onset of life threatening effects including seizures.

✅ If you are concerned your pet is in pain please contact your vet, 01623 846671.

✅ If you are concerned your pet has ingested something they shouldn’t have you can call Animal PoisonLine on 01202 509000 to get help and information.

🐾𝙈𝙞𝙘𝙧𝙤𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙥𝙨🐾

June is national microchip month, so we thought it would be a good idea to talk about them!

𝙇𝙖𝙬
• It is now the law that all dogs are microchipped by 8 weeks of age and all cats are microchipped by 20 weeks of age.
• Owner details must be kept up to date.
• Registration of the microchip must be with an approved database.

❌ Failure to comply with these laws may result in a hefty fine.

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙖 𝙢𝙞𝙘𝙧𝙤𝙝𝙞𝙥
A device approximately the size of a grain of rice implanted beneath your pets skin. The microchip acts as a permanent digital ID, making it more reliable than ID tags and collars that may fall off. If your pet is ever lost a pet professional with a scanner can retrieve your pets chip number and enter it into the database to access your contact information and quickly reunite you with your pet.

It is N͟O͟T͟ a GPS device.

𝘿𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙢𝙮 𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙤𝙤𝙧 𝙘𝙖𝙩 𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙙 𝙖 𝙢𝙞𝙘𝙧𝙤𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙥?
Yes, indoor pets can sometimes escape and with the changes to the law they are now legally required to be microchipped regardless of their lifestyle.

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙛 𝙄 𝙢𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙖𝙗𝙧𝙤𝙖𝙙?
Different counties have different requirements regarding microchipping, if you stay overseas for a prolonged period of time we would advise to register your pets chip with a database in that country.

If you would like to book in to get your pet microchipped or scanned to check your details are up to date, please call to arrange an appointment on 01623 846671.

𝙏𝙄𝘾𝙆𝙎

More prevalent during warmer weather, ticks like using the long grass to hop onto your pet. They can be dangerous when latched as they can spread diseases such as Lyme disease, Ehrlichiosis and Babesiosis.

Check your pets each time they come indoors, remove any ticks you find (or get us to did it for you) and use a preventative treatment.
