📍 Microchipping your pet is a legal requirement – but it’s also one of the simplest and most effective ways to help them get home if they’re ever lost.

A microchip carries a unique ID number that links your pet to your contact details, allowing vets and rescue centres to quickly reunite you if they’re found 💛

If your pet isn’t microchipped yet, give us a call on 01858 462839.

📍 And remember - it’s essential that your contact details are kept up to date with your microchip provider, so you can be reached if your pet is found.

A tiny chip can make a huge difference 💜

💜 Meet Dolly – our purr‑fect patient!

Dolly joined us for her hyperthyroid medication check and senior health review… and of course, we couldn’t resist giving those beautiful eyes a closer look too 👀

Handled brilliantly (as always!), Dolly was an absolute superstar — truly one of the most well‑behaved feline patients we’ve had the pleasure of seeing ✨

Her eye check was carried out by Narumi, our veterinary surgeon with a special interest in eye care.

If you’ve ever noticed your pet’s eyes looking red, watery, squinty, or just not quite right, it’s always worth getting them checked.

📞Contact us on 0116 279 3054 to book with Narumi — she holds a Certificate in Veterinary Ophthalmology and runs dedicated eye clinics with longer appointments to diagnose and treat everything from common irritation to complex eye conditions.

💛Let’s work together to keep your pets safe this summer...

🔥 HEATSTROKE AWARENESS

• Walk dogs early morning or late evening
• Always provide fresh water & shade
• Keep exercise gentle in warm weather

If you suspect heatstroke — act FAST:
Wet then vet 💧

• Move your pet to a cool, shaded area
• Pour cool (not icy) water over your dog
• Call us on 01858 462 839

🔥 HOT PAVEMENTS BURN PAWS

Put the back of your hand on the pavement… If you can’t hold it there for 5–7 seconds — it’s too hot for paws! Choose grass where possible and walk during cooler times

🔥 DOGS DIE IN HOT CARS

Even with windows open, temperatures rise dangerously fast. Leave pets safely at home.

🔥 WATCH OUT FOR HEAT TRAPS

• Conservatories, sheds & greenhouses can become dangerously hot
• Always check before closing doors — cats can become trapped inside

💧 HYDRATION & SHADE IS KEY (Dogs, cats & small pets like rabbits and guinea pigs)

Ensure your pet always has access to a cool, shaded space.

• Keep water topped up — indoors AND outside
• Hydration helps pets regulate temperature and stay safe
• Provide shaded areas
• Keep tanks and cages out of direct sun
• Check for hot surfaces (e.g. unshaded artificial grass and stone)

🔥 SUNBURN IS REAL (Especially light-coloured pets!)

Areas like noses, ears and bellies are most vulnerable.

• Provide shade
• Limit time in direct sunlight
• Use pet-safe sunscreen (avoid eyes and mouth)

🔥 BLUE-GREEN ALGAE WARNING

Toxic algae can be fatal, even in small amounts.

Avoid letting dogs swim or drink from:

• Ponds, lakes or slow-moving water
• Water with green scum, foam or unusual colouring

🔥 SUMMER WALK SAFETY

• Keep walks short, slow and shaded
• Bring water for you and your dog
• Avoid the hottest part of the day

🔥 BBQ & GARDEN SAFETY

• Keep pets away from hot grills
• Avoid feeding BBQ scraps
• Dispose of waste carefully
• Provide shade and fresh water

🔥 TRAVELLING WITH YOUR DOG?

• Plan cool pit stops, bring water, and never leave pets in the car

☀️ Temperatures are set to soar this Bank Holiday weekend, and while many of us will be enjoying the sunshine, the hot weather can pose serious risks to our pets.

Every year, our veterinary teams see cases of heatstroke and dehydration that can become life-threatening very quickly. Dogs, cats, rabbits and other small pets can all struggle in high temperatures, so it's important to take extra precautions to keep them safe.

🐾 Walk dogs during the cooler parts of the day
💧 Make sure pets always have access to fresh water
🌳 Provide plenty of shade and cool resting areas
🚗 Never leave pets in cars, conservatories or poorly ventilated spaces
🔥 Check pavements and artificial grass before walks to avoid burnt paws

Watch for signs of heatstroke, including excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, wobbliness or collapse.

If you suspect your pet is suffering from heatstroke, move them somewhere cool, offer water and contact your veterinary practice immediately for advice.

Stay safe and enjoy the sunshine responsibly with your pets. ❤️

👀 “It’s always been a bit gunky…”

If you’re regularly wiping discharge from your pet’s eyes, it’s easy to assume that’s just normal for them. But persistent discharge isn’t something we ignore - it’s often a sign the eye isn’t as comfortable as it should be.

It can be caused by:

🟪 Poor tear quality
🟪 Eyelids rubbing the eye
🟪 Inflammation
🟪 Conformational issues
🟪 Blocked tear drainage

Sometimes it’s mild. Sometimes it’s an early sign of a problem that slowly worsens over time.

If you’re cleaning their eyes daily, that’s usually a sign we should take a closer look.

How often do you wipe your pet’s eyes?

☀️ Protect your dog from heatstroke ☀️

Heatstroke in dogs is very serious and can develop quickly—especially during exercise in warm weather.

Many cases we see happen when dogs are walked in temperatures that are simply too high.

Knowing when it’s safe to head out can make all the difference 👇

🟠 28°C and over – Dangerous for all dogs, especially puppies and flat-faced, large or overweight dogs
🟠 24–27°C – Take great care, most dogs will struggle in these temperatures
🟠 20–23°C – Heatstroke is still a risk—keep walks short, go steady, and ensure plenty of water
🟠 16–19°C – Generally safe, but take extra care with higher-risk dogs
🟠 12–15°C – Safe for normal exercise ✅

⚠️ Watch for signs of heatstroke:

🟠 Excessive panting or drooling
🟠 Vomiting or diarrhoea
🟠 Weakness, confusion, or collapse

If you think your dog may have heatstroke, contact us immediately — this is an emergency. Acting fast can save their life.

💧 What to do straight away:

• Move your dog to a cool, shaded area
• Wet them with cool water (around 15°C if possible — but any cool water will do)
• Avoid pouring water over their head
• Do this before transport, but don’t delay getting to the vet

📞 Call ahead so our team can prepare for your arrival and provide urgent care: 01858 462 839

• Avoid covering your dog with wet towels (this can trap heat)
• Cooling vests that work by evaporation are safe to use

✨ 16 months later… and look who’s back!

This is the beautiful Psikos, who went missing over a year ago. After 16 long months, his family had almost given up hope… and then, out of the blue, they received a call from a veterinary practice in Broughton Astley to say he had been found safe and well!

Thanks to his microchip, the team were able to scan him and quickly reunite him with his owners 💜

Microchipping really does make all the difference – it’s the simplest way to ensure your pet can always find their way back to you.

Never give up hope… sometimes, they really do walk back into your life when you least expect it ✨
