If you've never heard of a Rocky Mountain Horse, let me introduce you. 🌿

The Rocky is a rare American heritage breed — fewer than 26,000 registered worldwide. They carry a natural four-beat ambling gait called the single-foot, which is present from birth, needs no aids or training, and is one of the smoothest rides you'll ever experience.

But honestly? What I love most is their nature. Curious. People-seeking. Calm. They look for you, not away from you.

This is Luna with her mum Circe — and this photo is basically a Rocky Mountain Horse personality portrait. Two black horses on a sunny spring morning, totally settled, completely at ease. That's not a coincidence. That's what a life lived well in a natural herd produces.

Luna is 10 months old, by our stallion Sirius (grandson of Sewell's Sam, one of five foundation stallions of the entire breed), and she's looking for a forever home. She'll mature around 14.2hh and will leave fully RMHA registered with her UK passport.

If you're curious about the breed, the bloodlines, or Luna herself — come and meet us. I love talking about these horses. 🖤

One week. 🤍

Seven days ago Lumi was pacing the field doing her very best “I’m absolutely fine, nothing is happening” impression, and KES Smoke’s Angel was a damp, wobbly, wide-eyed miracle in the straw.

Now look at her.
She’s found her legs, found her voice, and — most importantly — found that if she follows you to the gate something interesting usually happens. She hasn’t left our sides all week, which we’re choosing to take as a compliment.

Lumi continues to be the most chilled first-time mum we could have wished for. She eats her hay, keeps one ear on her filly, and radiates the kind of quiet confidence that makes you think she’s been doing this for years.

Angel is everything we hoped she’d be — bold, bright, people-mad, and that silver grulla coat is already starting to do extraordinary things in the sunshine. She’s going to be something very special indeed.

One week down. A lifetime to go. 🌿

I want to show you something that I think says everything. 💚

This is Luna at 10 months old, walking away from her herd on a lead rope. No drama. No calling back. No snatching. Just quietly, softly, off we go.

This isn't training. It's temperament. It's what you get when a foal has grown up in a safe, social herd from day one — when she's been handled every single day, never rushed, never scared, always met with calm.

She's a Rocky Mountain Horse filly by Sirius, out of Circe — and if you know Circe, you'll already understand why Luna is the way she is. That settled, trusting, this is fine nature is absolutely her mum's.

Luna is looking for a forever home. She'll mature around 14.2hh. Fully RMHA registered with UK passport.
Come and meet her if you'd like — she'll make up her own mind about you too. 🌙

This is what we breed for.

She’s a few days old. She walked straight over, dropped her head, and just… stayed. No treats. No coaxing. Just a foal who already thinks people are the most interesting thing in the field.

KES Smoke’s Angel, silver grulla filly. She has no idea how special she is.
(She probably does.)

🌿 Keythorpe foals are handled from day one — not because we train them to tolerate people, but because we raise them to seek us out. This is the result.

A few days in and she has already decided she runs this place.

KES Smoke’s Angel — silver grulla filly, Kentucky Mountain Horse dam, bred right here at Keythorpe — is bold, bright, curious and absolutely shameless about walking straight up to whoever is in the field.

Lumi is doing everything right. First-time mum and utterly unflappable. The apple didn’t fall far.

Angel will be raised the Keythorpe way — out with the herd, handled from day one, late weaned, given every chance to grow into her confidence before she has to face the world alone. She’s already halfway there.

Meet Luna. 🌙

Luna is a 10-month-old Rocky Mountain Horse filly by our stallion Sirius, out of our beautiful mare Circe. She's black with a crescent-shaped star — which is exactly why she's called Luna.

She's been out with the herd since day one, handled by me from birth: haltered, led, groomed, feet picked up, farrier every six weeks. She doesn't know anything other than calm, quiet, kind.

Luna is looking for a forever home. 🖤

Her mum Circe is one of my absolute favourite horses — the gentlest, most loving nature, and a mare who truly looks after her rider. She has that beautiful Rocky four-beat gait and can really go when you ask her to. Luna is already showing us exactly who she is — people-loving, gentle, and utterly unflappable.

She'll mature around 14.2hh and will be fully RMHA registered with UK passport before she leaves us.

If you'd like to know more or come and meet her, drop me a message or pop a comment below. We'd love to find her the right match. 🌿

She’s here. 🤍

KES Smoke’s Angel arrived in the early hours, and she came into the world exactly as she should — quietly, perfectly, without a fuss. Lumi was an absolute star for a first-time mum. Textbook, unassisted, calm. We couldn’t have asked for more.

Angel is a silver grulla filly by Holy Smoke’s Lumi — a Kentucky Mountain Horse — out of our herd, and she is already looking for people. Hours old and she wants to be in your pocket. We honestly don’t know where she gets it from. (We do. It’s in the blood.)

She is one of a kind — silver grulla is a breathtaking colour that will shift and shimmer as she grows. Right now she’s all fluffy ears and enormous eyes and we are completely gone for her.

Welcome to the herd, little one. You were worth every sleepless hour. 🌿

Lupin is looking for his forever home 🐴

He is a nine month old Rocky Mountain Horse c**t, by our stallion Sirius (grandson of Sewell's Sam, one of the foundation stallions of the entire Rocky Mountain Horse breed) and out of Sonnet, one of our most people-orientated mares with a beautifully smooth gait.

Lupin has been handled from birth. He sees the farrier every six weeks, leads beautifully, stands for grooming and has his feet picked out without a fuss. He lives in a herd with 24/7 access to forage and friends — he is emotionally settled, confident and completely at ease around people.

He will be RMHA registered and passported before he leaves Keythorpe. Very high four figures. Viewing very welcome — come and meet him and see what this breed is really about.

DM or comment below and I'll be in touch.

One of my favourite things about the way we do things at Keythorpe is that no horse is ever on their own.

Lupin here is having a nap at nine months old, completely relaxed, while his mum and the rest of the herd stand nearby. Sirius lives with the mares and foals as part of the herd — this is how Rocky Mountain Horses have always lived, and it's exactly how we raise them here.

The result? Foals that are calm, emotionally settled and completely at ease around people. You can't train that. You have to build it from the beginning.
