JC Dog Behaviour & Training

JC Dog Behaviour & Training Providing behaviour and training sessions in Market Harborough and surrounding areas. Jo Cramp BSc Animal Behaviour and Welfare. IMDT Qualified Trainer.

Welcome to JC Dog Behaviour & Training. All training and behaviour modification is done through ethical, modern, science based training that is fun for both owner and dog. My name is Jo and I have grown up with dogs since the age of 3, my first family dog was Sasha a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Being a young child at the time I didn't get involved in any of Sasha's training but I do have fond memo

ries of going on walks with her and my Dad. Our second family dog Khizer, another Staffy, is still living with us today. I was Khizer's main trainer, taking him to the local dog club at 14yrs old where my Grandad was a trainer. When Khizer was around one, he developed some aggression towards myself while we were on holiday- this is where my passion for dog behaviour really kicked in! We saw a behaviourist who gave us the information needed to ensure we were all kept safe, Khizer included. Fast forward a few years and I started studying Animal Management and Welfare at Moulton College, part of this included a work experience placement at my local dog club where I assisted with classes. I then went on to study BSc Animal Behaviour and Welfare at Harper Adams University, graduating in 2018. Since graduating I have been working at Leicester Animal Rescue, giving me more essential hands-on experience with all breeds and personality types of dog. I also adopted my first personal dog from the rescue, Tom, who has taught me the best way of training is through fun, games and love! At the rescue Tom portrayed as very ignorant, independant and non-affectionate... What a different dog he became once he got home!! I have had many training challenges with Tom, some of which we are still working on to this day, but each day with him my heart grows bigger. He really is my once in a lifetime dog. So that is my story so far! I am a proud member of the institute of modern dog trainers, the pet professional network, pet dog training instructors & a provisional member of the association of pet behaviour counsellors. I am continuously learning and expanding my knowledge of dog behaviour so I can provide the most up to date methods and best support for my clients. Please don't hesitate to get in touch for any behaviour and training needs.

‼️ If an “aggression expert” isn’t advocating for thorough investigation into possible pain as part of their work with you… they are NOT ethical! ‼️

This is a sensitive story, and as such names have been changed to protect my clients’ privacy and identity. The dog pictured below is mine.

Over the last couple of months I’ve been working with a family and their dog (we’ll call him “Benny”). A year ago, Benny turned from a loving family pet to suddenly guarding the lounge; anytime that someone made an unexpected move in the room or entered it, Benny would begin posturing and barking at them, which eventually escalated into jumping and grabbing at their clothes, and then bites that punctured the skin.

A physical examination at the vet didn’t yield any results, and Benny was taking multiple types of anxiety medication that didn’t touch his behaviour.

We started working together, and I asked them to have some scans done to further investigate pain. Behaviour changes are one of the first indicators of pain, but otherwise dogs are REALLY good at hiding pain and it can be easily missed, even in a vet exam.

Because they had already been to see the vet, I was met with some resistance. We did implement safety measures and some training strategies to try to help Benny feel more at ease in the lounge, but his behaviour wasn’t improving.

Eventually, Benny did have an MRI, and it was revealed that he has a chiari malformation in his brain - that is, part of his brain was pushing down into the spinal canal. We could have done all the training in the world but it wouldn’t have mattered, because this wasn’t a behaviour issue.

How many trainers would have slapped a shock collar on this poor dog, who was already suffering? How many would have simply said that he needed to learn boundaries or hear the word “no” and not looked any further? How many would say that it’s all well and good to use positive reinforcement, until it “doesn’t work” and then you need punishment?

It’s estimated that up to 80% of aggression cases have some kind of underlying medical issue. You NEED a behaviour expert who can liaise with your vet and who will advocate for *thorough* examination, not just a quick check over to tick a box.

It’s an unregulated industry. Be careful who you trust with your dog, even if they call themselves an expert or have tons of followers. And if your dog’s behaviour suddenly changes, they’re probably in pain.

It’s heating up over the next week 🥵

Those who have sessions booked in we will make adjustments as necessary and I’ll be in touch 🫶

As always stay safe and walk early or late - both of my boys struggle in anything above 22 but I’d strongly advise not doing anything longer than 10min toilet trips for EVERYONE if it’s above 24.
