JC Dog Behaviour & Training

JC Dog Behaviour & Training Providing behaviour and training sessions in Market Harborough and surrounding areas. Jo Cramp BSc Animal Behaviour and Welfare. IMDT Qualified Trainer.

Welcome to JC Dog Behaviour & Training. All training and behaviour modification is done through ethical, modern, science based training that is fun for both owner and dog. My name is Jo and I have grown up with dogs since the age of 3, my first family dog was Sasha a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Being a young child at the time I didn't get involved in any of Sasha's training but I do have fond memo

ries of going on walks with her and my Dad. Our second family dog Khizer, another Staffy, is still living with us today. I was Khizer's main trainer, taking him to the local dog club at 14yrs old where my Grandad was a trainer. When Khizer was around one, he developed some aggression towards myself while we were on holiday- this is where my passion for dog behaviour really kicked in! We saw a behaviourist who gave us the information needed to ensure we were all kept safe, Khizer included. Fast forward a few years and I started studying Animal Management and Welfare at Moulton College, part of this included a work experience placement at my local dog club where I assisted with classes. I then went on to study BSc Animal Behaviour and Welfare at Harper Adams University, graduating in 2018. Since graduating I have been working at Leicester Animal Rescue, giving me more essential hands-on experience with all breeds and personality types of dog. I also adopted my first personal dog from the rescue, Tom, who has taught me the best way of training is through fun, games and love! At the rescue Tom portrayed as very ignorant, independant and non-affectionate... What a different dog he became once he got home!! I have had many training challenges with Tom, some of which we are still working on to this day, but each day with him my heart grows bigger. He really is my once in a lifetime dog. So that is my story so far! I am a proud member of the institute of modern dog trainers, the pet professional network, pet dog training instructors & a provisional member of the association of pet behaviour counsellors. I am continuously learning and expanding my knowledge of dog behaviour so I can provide the most up to date methods and best support for my clients. Please don't hesitate to get in touch for any behaviour and training needs.

“Maybe we just need more exposure.”

It’s one of the most common thoughts people have when they’re living with a reactive dog.

But what if the answer isn’t more?

What if it’s less?

Less speed.

Less overwhelm.

Less pressure.

What if it’s:

More space.
More success.
More opportunities to stay under threshold.

Because reactivity isn’t usually improved by throwing dogs into more situations.

It’s improved by adjusting the environment so they can actually cope with the situations they’re already in.

That’s why some of the most effective changes are also the simplest:

Slow down.

Shorten the busy walk.

Create distance.

Focus on wellbeing first.

Small changes. Big difference. 🐾

A lot of people think their puppy is being stubborn when they suddenly stop walking.

But most of the time?
Your puppy isn’t refusing… they’re overwhelmed.

One minute they’re walking fine.

The next they’re frozen to the spot, sitting down, or refusing to move.

And honestly, when you look at the world from their perspective, it makes sense 👀

Cars rushing past.
New sounds.
Strangers.
Dogs.
Smells everywhere.

That’s a LOT for a baby dog to process all at once.
The mistake most people make is trying to pull them forward or “make” them continue the walk… but pressure usually makes them shut down even more.

Instead, try this:
🐾 Pause and let them take everything in
🐾 Loosen the lead and remove the pressure
🐾 When they start moving again = party 🥳
🐾 Keep walks short and low-pressure at first
🐾 Celebrate tiny moments of confidence

Confidence on walks isn’t built by forcing puppies through scary situations.

It’s built by helping them feel safe enough to explore at their own pace 💛

Loose-lead practice not clicking? These micro-mistakes are sabotaging it 🤦‍♀️

Most people think loose-lead walking fails because their dog is “stubborn”.

But honestly? It’s usually the tiny things happening during the walk that accidentally teach pulling instead 👀

I see these 3 all the time:

🐾 You hold the lead tight the entire walk
When dogs feel constant pressure, they naturally lean into it. A slightly longer lead gives them room to sniff, make better choices, and walk more comfortably beside you.

🐾 The rewards come too late
Your dog walks nicely for a few seconds… nothing happens… so they go back to pulling because THAT’S what feels rewarding. Early on, your timing and reward frequency matters more than perfection.

🐾 The walk starts before your dog is mentally with you
If they burst out the door overstimulated, you’re already playing catch-up. Even 60 seconds of calm engagement before leaving can completely change the tone of the walk.

Loose-lead walking is rarely about doing one big thing differently.

It’s usually a few small shifts that suddenly make everything click.

Reactivity starts here 👀

Not at the bark.
Not at the lunge.
Not at the explosion.

It starts in the moments before.

The scanning.
The stiff body.
The slowed movement.
The hard stare.
The closed mouth.
The weight shift forward.
The inability to disengage.

These are the whispers before the shout.

Learning canine body language changes everything. Because when you can spot the early signs, you can step in before your dog feels the need to react.

How many of these signs do you see in your dog? 🐾

I am so proud of this team 🙌🎉

In just a few short weeks they have gone from complete meltdowns to being able to walk in the busiest dog park in Harborough 🤯

And we’re not finished yet! Now we’ll be building up their social skills so they can safely interact with other dogs 🫶

Can your reactive dog do this?

Two members of my Reactivity Progression Club
A head-on pass less than road width distance
Zero drama

No staring each other down
No tension building
No corrections

Just two dogs doing the hardest part of reactivity work: staying connected to their owner while another dog passes at close range

This doesn’t happen by accident. It’s the result of correct guidance, patience, and having a community that understands.

This is what progress actually looks like.

If you want help getting your dog to this stage, send me a message with “REACTIVE” and I’ll point you in the right direction.
