Another case that we wanted to share with you…

Alfie is a beautiful 3 year old cat. He unfortunately sustained some injuries recently while out and about. He came home late one evening with worrying back end injuries. He was examined and stabilised at the emergency vets before being referred back to us for X-rays and treatment.

The X-rays showed that poor Alfie had sustained a serious tail pull injury which had caused separation of the vertebrae just behind his pelvis.

These injuries can occur if a cat’s tail has been trapped in a door or via a trauma such as a road traffic accident.

As well as the trauma and pain, these injuries can cause irreversible damage to the nerves that supply the bladder and bowels, making it impossible for affected patients to empty themselves. If this happens, euthanasia is sadly usually required.

Alfie’s injury was very concerning because it was so high in the tail, making nerve damage more likely. There was an anxious wait to see if Alfie could pass urine and faeces and thank goodness he could!!

The next step in his treatment was having his tail amputated. After a tail pull injury the tail is limp and can no longer be moved so it is removed to make life easier and more comfortable for the patient. Vet Melissa carried out Alfie’s surgery. He has made an amazing recovery and we are absolutely delighted. He’s a super friendly boy who was still cheerful even after such a horrible injury, and of course is super handsome. Well done Alfie!! 😻❤️🐾🌟

We have a case to share that we thought you would find interesting. Squiggle is a super active working border collie. Her owners had become aware of a change in her breathing and came to see vet Tim. After a check over and some treatment Tim suggested that Squiggle came in for some X-rays. These showed that some of Squiggle’s abdominal organs were sitting in her chest cavity! This meant that at some point Squiggle had sustained an injury to her diaphragm- this is the muscular sheet that separates the chest and abdominal cavities and is important in the mechanics of breathing. Squiggle’s lungs were being squashed by the abdominal organs and weren’t able to expand normally.
Tim carried out surgery on Squiggle to repair the tear in her diaphragm. Diaphragmatic rupture repairs are high risk procedures - during the procedure patients have to have IPPV (intermittent positive pressure ventilation) as they are unable to breathe for themselves. During Squiggle’s procedure our amazing nurses took over her breathing for her and maintained her complex anaesthetic, while Tim carefully returned the abdominal contents to the abdominal cavity before repairing the large hole in the diaphragm. He also had to drain over a litre of fluid that had accumulated in Squiggle’s chest and abdomen since the diaphragmatic injury. Once the repair was complete Tim had to carefully drain air from the chest cavity to allow the lungs to reinflate and at this stage Squiggle could start to breathe for herself again. Her abdominal wound was closed and the surgery was complete. The first X-ray is before surgery and the second is a post op X-ray with the repaired diaphragm.
After surgery like this it is vital that patients are well rested and Squiggle’s owners were fantastic. They followed her post op care plan fully - not easy with an athletic collie! This meant that despite such a serious problem Squiggle has made a fantastic recovery. She is now back at work and her owner has kindly sent these beautiful update photos. We are so delighted with the outcome for this lovely girl. A massive well done to Squiggle and her family!! ❤️❤️🐾.

This lovely boy is Dylan! He came in today to have some dental work done. As you can see he had quite a build up of tartar on his teeth. Thankfully this had not yet caused gum recession or loose teeth Dylan did not need any extractions 🥳 He still has a full set of teeth which look great after a thorough clean. His gums are slightly inflamed as ours can be following hygienist treatment but this will soon settle down. Regular dental care at home will hopefully help to keep his teeth clean. Dylan was such a good patient - he really is a lovely boy ❤️🐾

This little chap is Ralph. He belongs to Sarah’s daughter Charlotte who some of you know from reception. He’s the youngest Temperton pup and the smallest but not the most straightforward! Ralph was been a very nervous and reactive puppy so there were no plans to neuter him as castration can make anxious dogs more anxious. However, one of Ralph’s testicles did not descend and retained testicles should be removed because they are at an increased risk of developing tumours over time. So the plan was to remove the retained testicle and leave the other one to avoid medical and behavioural problems. Well, adolescence hit and Ralph has become quite frisky which the other dogs are not impressed by so today he has had phase one of treatment…. Sarah has removed Ralph’s retained testicle and placed a hormone implant. This will chemically castrate Ralph’s remaining testicle for 6 months so that we can see how his behaviour is. If all is well he can then have the remaining testicle removed but if his anxiety worsens we can let the implant wear off, or remove it. So fingers are crossed for a good outcome!! Ralph took everything in his (tiny) stride and recovered very quickly from his anaesthetic. After two breakfasts and some cuddles he was well enough to help nurse Beth on the phone ❤️😂🐾

The veterinary industry is a hot topic in the news today and the industry has suffered a crisis over the last few years. Consumer trust in the industry is at an all time low and we await the full report from the CMA (Competition and Marketing Authority) with interest. Here at The Little Vet Company, we are fully and proudly independent, our prices are available on our website and on the TV in the waiting room. Our vets are always happy to provide a quote for any recommended procedures. It is a sad fact that we cannot always compete with the online pharmacies, but we will always provide a prescription to any clients who would prefer to purchase prescription only medicines online. If anyone has any questions or concerns about anything that the current media coverage has raised, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Kind regards
Sarah and Tracey 🥰

Our lovely nurse Cheyenne is extra busy at the moment hand rearing new born kittens! A very sick pregnant cat was found at a roadside and taken to a vet practice in Newcastle. They did their best to save her but she had severe internal injuries that could not be treated so her kittens were delivered by caesarean section and sadly she was euthanased. There were five kittens so one of the nurses volunteered to help and reached out to Cheyenne who is her friend. Between them they are caring for the kittens - Cheyenne took on three. Kittens are born with eyes and ears closed, need feeding every couple of hours around the clock and have to be helped to void their bladder and bowel so it is a lot of work! Sadly one of the kittens, a little girl, passed away at two days old but the two boys are currently doing well. We are very proud of Cheyenne and her commitment to giving these kittens their best chance of survival 🥰❤️❤️🐾🐾🐾
