Flystrike Awareness for Rabbits 🐰🐇

As the warmer weather arrives, veterinarians see an increase in flystrike cases in rabbits – a painful and often fatal condition if not caught early.

💔 What is flystrike?
Flies are attracted to soiled fur (often around the bottom). They lay eggs, which hatch into maggots that can quickly burrow into the rabbit’s skin.

Signs to watch for:
• Lethargy or unusual quietness
• Loss of appetite
• A dirty or wet bottom
• Strong smell
• Visible maggots (advanced stage – urgent emergency)

🚨 This is a medical emergency! It is vital that you contact your vet immediately if you suspect flystrike.

Prevention is key:
• Check your rabbit’s rear end at least twice daily
• Keep housing clean and dry
• Groom regularly, especially long-haired rabbits
• Ensure a healthy diet to prevent diarrhoea
• Use vet-recommended flystrike prevention treatments such as Rearguard which is available on the bunny complete care plan.
