🐹Day 4 of guinea pig awareness week: enrichment
As you may have read in yesterdays post, guinea pigs are foraging animals and like to hunt down their food. Putting their hay or pellets in a hay rack or a kong type toy makes them work a little harder for their food and keeps them active, spreading a few pellets around their hutch encourages foraging and in the hot summer months, you can freeze treats in an ice cube for them!
There are all sorts of ways to keep your furry pals entertained. Why not try these ideas?
Feel free to share a few of your own ideas here, too- as a piggie owner, I'm always looking for ways to help my crew!

🐹Day 3 of guinea pig awareness week: feeding.
A balanced diet is important for all pets, not just guinea pigs, but it is especially important as guinea pigs MUST have vitamin C in their diet. If they don't get it, they could develop scurvy (which does affect humans too) and this could affect their joints, mobility and teeth.
Along with, ideally, a pellet diet, like Burgess Excel nuggets, feed them a good selection of fresh vegetables like sweet peppers, kale broccoli, parsley, oranges, strawberries, tomatoes...they love a good choice of healthy snacks!
Hay is another important part of their diet as their teeth are constantly growing, and eating this roughage, keeps teeth in great condition. Always make sure water is readily available.
Although it is easier to put food in a bowl, try and sprinkle some pellets around the hutch- guinea pigs are foraging animals and like to have a snuffle around, or you can try the enrichment ideas on the picture!

🐹Day 2 of guinea pig awareness week: socialisation
Guinea pigs are very social animals and love company, but unfortunately, if you just have 1 guinea pig, we are not enough- they need at least 1 other guinea pig friend. Guinea pigs thrive in groups of 2 or more- the best being a male (boar) and 1 or more females (sows). Males can live together but usually only if they are related or have been together from a young age.
Did you know in Switzerland, it is ILLEGAL to own a single piggy! 🤯
You do need to make sure their hutch is a suitable size, as the more you have, the more space they will need.
A common mistake with guinea pigs, is to give them a rabbit friend. This can work out well, but is very risky as guinea pigs can easily be injured by a kick by a rabbit, so please be mindful when looking for a friend.

🐹Day 1 of guinea pig awareness week!
Today is about welfare and making sure your piggy is happy and well cared for. You need to make sure they have a suitable hutch, that they are given a balanced diet (nuggets are better than the mixed flake diets as piggies can be picky and eat their favourite things!), that they have at least 1 friend living with them (they are very social fellows and when it comes to guinea pigs, the more the merrier!). You need to check them regularly-teeth, fur (especially if you have a long haired piggy), body and feet and don't forget to let them out in the garden for a run around- they may even popcorn for you!
Please feel free to call or pop into the clinic and book your FREE CHECK UP AND NAIL CLIP for your piggie with our RVN's Colette or Maria🐹

*Popcorning is when your guinea pig squeaks and jumps in the air excitedly! It's very cute and is a sign of a happy pet!

This is Bella 🐾🐶

Bella started to visit our RVN Lauren in April after her family had noticed she had gained a little extra weight!

Due to Bella’s breed, she was higher risk of spinal and joint complications alongside other factors that accompany obesity in pets. Bella’s family wanted to act quickly to ensure Bella remained healthy and happy and able to continue living her best life!

Over the space of 4 months, her family followed a strict diet plan and have seen incredible results seeing her body condition score go from 7/9 to a perfect 5/9!

Bella will continue to visit our Holly House clinic to monitor her weight closely and keep us topped up with kisses and cuddles!

Well done Bella and of course your family for working so hard! 🐾❤️

If you feel your pet could benefit from our help with weight loss, please contact your veterinary team, who will be happy to assist 🐾
