Slab fractures are fairly common and vets differ on their advice on extracting them, but most would advise it asap as I’ve found.
It’s when the tooth is sheared off sideways, sometimes cleanly but usually it becomes a flappy piece (like a cat flap 🤣) and eventually it breaks off itself over time. The first photo is a Frenchie I saw with the flap in April and last weeks visit you can see it had gone. The pulp is exposed and the tartar has built up far more than her other teeth, as the surface is now rough. I’ve of course advised vet care.
(The second photo isn’t mine, it just shows the flappy bit clearly. It’s not for me to poke about teeth that need vet care.)

Rubbish photo with the circled teeth but it’s to show how I noticed issues between her rear teeth and her owner took her straight to the vet and they were extracted 🤩 a few weeks ago.
The clearer photo shows how quickly the soft plaque had returned after her dental, thankfully it hadn’t hardened yet and just brushed away x

It often comes to a point with my OAP clients that it’s best to stop cleaning their teeth. This could be because they become less tolerant (a bit grumpy) or lack of confidence with failing eyesight. If they’re becoming sore and achy all over or arthritic they might not appreciate me holding their heads as certain angles. Or if the groom is a priority to keep them comfortable then a teeth clean as well might be too much 💓💓.
It’s sadly come to the stage with these wonderfully sweet Yorkie sisters. This one did have a quick clean but just look at the difference after just brushing them. All that smelly plaque full of bacteria simply brushed away. However her sister had recently been diagnosed with possibly a neurological issue and her owner and I felt cleaning her teeth was both unnecessary and too much for her 💜💜💜

I’ve recently started to charge a £10 consultation fee for those owners preferring to book in just for an assessment before committing to a full clean. I still take photos and will fill in a record card if I see any major issues already. I can give you more of an idea of cost too although quotes can be approximate sometimes. (Quotes are valid for 4wks.)
This was a beautifully bearded Schnauzer, her teeth looked great and not too much build up to remove 💜💜💜. She seemed very happy to let me have a good rummage 😂. She’s booked in next month for her actual cleaning x

My bad for forgetting to send a reminder as promised, but considering this little giddy Yorkie 🩷🩷🩷 has gone 10wks overdue, they weren’t too bad at all (especially for a Yorkie). Her next reminder is definitely in the diary! ✍️

Sweetest little 4yr Cockapoo fell asleep whilst I was doing her photo montages 😍
It’s been 15 months since I last saw her so ideally she needs to come more often… I don’t think she’ll mind 😂

Sometimes muzzles are essential for aggressive or snappy dogs whether towards people or other dogs/stopping them scavenging food on walks/at the vets or groomers if they’re fearful etc. As long as they’re used correctly (and a type that allows them to pant/drink/be sick), it’s no different than using a collar to attach a name tag to, or a lead to stop them running off or a coat to keep them warm 😍

Dogs amaze me they really do, this very striking large Cockapoo was really timid of me when he arrived for his first clean. His owner of course explained he can be very nervous too 😍.
When I started to clean them he moved his head away faster than a rocket 🚀 ha ha but he soon accepted the procedure, albeit verrrry slow movements from me. Not an ounce of aggression towards this stranger poking around his mouth 😍. The fact he was so beautifully styled (by Dapper Dogs in Sale) gave me confidence he could accept a teeth cleaning. A nervous dog with such a fancy style can only be trusting of his groomer 😍.
I didn’t feel he’d accept my surgical gloves nor an actual brush of his teeth but I can work on that in the future, with the help from his owner at home.
Best of all when his owner collected him, he got a bit giddy and gave me a few little licks and a cuddle… so I was temporarily forgiven 🤣.

It’s a struggle for me to see teeth like this and owners often not seeking out a vet quote, let alone having a vet denta...

It’s a struggle for me to see teeth like this and owners often not seeking out a vet quote, let alone having a vet dental. In this case his owner said their vet isn’t concerned at all and if that’s the case, I instructed them to find a better vet and not just accept one opinion. Maybe the vet couldn’t have a thorough look as he was clearly in pain just having photos taken 😕😕.
Teeth worsen every month and every year, I often hear they’re too old now for a vet dental (but they weren’t this old 2 years ago when I first informed them of the dental disease). Age isn’t a disease either and every dog deserves a pain free mouth. Even more so into old age, they have all kinds of aches and pains without severe tooth ache as well. Just because they still eat is not an indication they are not in pain. Waiting until your dog has chosen to give up on life and actually stop eating because they’re in agony, is beyond my comprehension I’m afraid.
I appreciate cost can be a major factor to owners… how I wish vet dentals could somehow be more affordable, especially as insurance usually doesn’t cover it.
