🦷🐱 Cat Dental Surgery: It’s Not Just a Cleaning! 🐾

Did you know feline dental surgery is way more complex than most people realize? 😿

From hidden tooth resorptions to fragile feline jaws, each procedure requires:
✅ Full anesthesia
✅ Precision extractions
✅ Pain management tailored to cats

Cats hide pain incredibly well, so what seems like a minor dental issue could actually be a serious, painful condition.

Your cat’s mouth deserves expert care — and their quality of life depends on it. 💙

As the warmer months arrive, we are more likely to spot Britain’s only venomous snake - the adder. While bites in dogs are thankfully rare, cases tend to peak between June and August. ☀️🐍
Adders are a protected species and these beautiful creatures are an important part of our ecosystem. They are not aggressive and only bite in self defence - including when stepped on or surprised by a curious dog!
By staying alert and respecting their space, we can help protect both our dogs and
our native wildlife. Adders are most commonly found in drier, open habitats like:
🌳 Woodland edges
🌱 Grassy heaths and moorland
🏖 Sandy coastal areas and rocky paths
Keeping dogs under close control or on a lead, and sticking to clear paths, can help
to avoid encounters.

We all love a day at the seaside with our four-legged friends, but let’s make sure we’re keeping our beaches safe, clean and fun for everyone. 🏖🐶
✅ Pick up after your dog - and dispose of poo bags properly
✅ Be observant of restrictions - not all beaches allow dogs all year round
✅ Keep your dog under control - use a lead in busy areas or near wildlife
✅ Don’t let your dog approach others without checking first - not every dog
or person wants to say hello
✅ Watch out for heatstroke - take breaks for shade and fresh water, and stay
out of the intense midday sun
✅ Never let your dog drink seawater - small amounts can cause vomiting or
diarrhoea and large amounts can have dangerous consequences
Most importantly - have fun and enjoy the sand and surf! We’d love to see

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) is urging pet owners to take precautions when walking dogs near freshwater bodies this summer, as the warm weather brings with it an increased risk of toxic blue-green algae growth.

Is Simba not the most gorgeous baby you have ever seen!!!

🐾 Protect Your Purr-fect Pal! 🐾
Vaccinating your kitten isn’t just a good idea—it’s essential. 💉 Kittens are vulnerable to serious (and preventable!) diseases like calicivirus and feline herpesvirus. Early vaccines help build their immunity and keep them safe as they grow into healthy, happy cats. 🐱❤️

✅ Boosters follow every year
✅ A fully vaccinated kitten = peace of mind for you

It’s grass seed season! These barbed seeds easily attach to fur and can burrow into the skin, causing pain and infection.
Watch for These Signs:

Ears: Head shaking, scratching, and discomfort may indicate a seed lodged in the ear. These don’t work their way out and may need removal under sedation or anaesthetic.

Eyes: Redness, weeping, pawing, or squinting can signal a seed under the eyelid. Prompt vet attention is needed to prevent damage.

Feet: Lameness, licking, swelling, or oozing between toes could mean a seed has pierced the skin. These can travel up the leg and may cause infections.

Prevention Tips:
Avoid areas with long grass during summer. Trim coats, especially around feet, ears, and between toes – particularly important for breeds like spaniels. After walks, check your dog thoroughly and remove any visible seeds.

You’d be forgiven for thinking it’s the cheetah, but asking your dog what they have in their mouth is guaranteed to produce warp speed. 🐕🚀
Sometimes it’s a toy... sometimes it’s something you’d really rather not know about. 🤢 Not all stolen treasures are edible, so if they’re sprinting away with something weird, check twice before it becomes a vet visit!

How hot is too hot for a dog walk?
Each dog is different, for example Brachycephalic (flat faced),elderly or young, excitable dogs are more at risk of heat stroke, but the below shows a general rule of thumb in terms of care needed when walking your dog in hot weather.
Remember, your dog missing a walk or an event is not the end of the world, if it could save their life.

Awesome work by our Head Nurse Bethan Panter RVN ISFM certFN Yew Tree Veterinary Surgery who has just received a RCVS Knowledge ‘highly commended’ for her Pain Scoring Care Quality Improvement Project.

As Head Nurse, Bethan plays an active role in clinical improvement within her practice. When doing basic nursing audits, she noticed there was a lack of pain scoring occurring post operatively and on hospitalized patients.

When she investigated further, she discovered that this was due to a lack of confidence and understanding of pain scoring techniques within the nursing team. So only 24% of patients were having their pain scores recorded.

Bethan shared her audit with her nursing team responsible for post-operative care in a face-to-face meeting. She asked them what would make them feel more confident with pain scoring and co-created a plan with them.

This resulted in one-to-one pain scoring training with Bethan along, training via CVS’ Knowledge Hub platform and the instigation of a ‘buddy-system’ to support less experienced team members. It also prompted changes to the practice’s hospital forms, and the introduction of laminated pain scales.

In addition, further discussions were also held on recording pre and post op temperament observations and temperament change, repeated pain scores when rescue analgesia was given, and delaying discharges appropriately.

The quality improvement project went very well. Subsequent audits by Bethan found the Yew Tree nursing team increased the amount of pain scoring and administration of post-operative analgesia from 24% to 94.2% in just 6 months.

Bethan says: “We’ve been very pleased with the success of this audit project. This significant improvement has enhanced pain management and patient care in our practice. Our aim is to keep improving patient care, with this project and others, providing gold standard nursing care to our patients. We hope to continue to promote a working environment that has a no blame culture, and a culture of positive clinical change.”

This is great work Bethan. Well done to you and all of the team!
