That’s what my sister said as she encouraged Nettie to look out of the window at the sea today.
And at first, yeah — her body was soft. Calmly curious.
But then I saw it shift.
Curiosity turned into scanning. Her body started to stiffen. She was no longer just taking it in, she was switching on.
And to most people, that’s still a cute moment.
But here’s what I saw: a dog quietly building fixation. Starting to wire in that what’s out there is where her energy should go. That she should be alert, vigilant, activated… whenever something moves in the distance.
In the Rebalance world, we’re not aiming for hyper-engaged, over-interested dogs.
We’re aiming for dogs who can register a stimulus — and then release it.
Stay soft.
Stay with you.
Stay neutral.
So I gently moved her away from the window.
Not as a punishment. But as a pattern interrupt.
Because if I want a dog who doesn’t lose her mind at the postman, or the seagull, or the kid on the scooter next week… it starts here.
With the energy I allow.
With the patterns I interrupt.
With the standards I hold — even in the quiet moments.
