This May is Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month. And we’d love to introduce you to our amazing nursing team here at MCR Vets.

Throughout the month, we’ll be showcasing more of what our nurses do every day at the practice. They are incredibly knowledgeable, highly skilled, and play a vital role in patient care - they don’t just cuddle animals!

From monitoring anaesthetics and running laboratory tests, to dental procedures, inpatient care, running consultations, client support, and assisting in surgery, our nurses are at the heart of everything we do. We’re so lucky to have such a dedicated team caring for your pets 💚💚💚

*warning graphic images of dental surgery*
We’ve had a run on fractures in the big teeth at the back of the mouth (called carnassial teeth) in dogs recently. So we thought we’d share some images with you of what these look like.

Pepper came to us because her owner wanted some anti-anxiety medication for a long car journey, and whilst she was here, incidentally mentioned that for the last few days pepper had been licking a bit more and was slightly more clingy. Vet Sinéad completed a full examination and found this fractured tooth in Pepper’s mouth - ouch!

Pepper’s owner booked her in to have a full oral health assessment under anaesthetic, which includes full dental X-rays, and to deal with the offending tooth. We got these lovely shots of the tooth, followed by what it looked like once it was out.

A few days later Monty came for a dental and he too was found to have a fractured carnassial, with pulp (the sensitive bit of the tooth) exposure - see last video, so we did exactly the same for him!

Both dogs recovered really well and are much happier in themselves. Despite the pain these teeth were causing, it’s important to note that both dogs were eating and drinking normally, with just minor changes to their behaviour, but were both noted to be significantly happier after the removal - so the pain was causing far more discomfort than we could tell.

Dental pain is so often under diagnosed/reported, but we see our patients so much happier after their dental procedures 💚

To avoid tooth fractures the veterinary dental specialists recommend not giving anything too hard for your dog to chew on, ideally you should be able to make a dent in it with your fingernail.

Our friends over at the Manchester Cat Clinic are taking part in a study for a medication that is showing promise for slowing the progress of kidney disease in cats. The details are below, if you think your cat may be eligible please talk to us and we will be happy to make the referral if you want to take part 💚

It’s a key part of our ethos to work with other clinics for the benefit of our patients, as their health is what is most important to us 💚

Manchester Cat Clinic is excited to be one of dozens of practices across the UK and Europe who are trialling a new medication for Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). This medication is already licensed in some other parts of the world and shows promising evidence for slowing down the progression of CKD. We are really excited to give our patients the opportunity to be among the first cats in Europe to potentially benefit from it.

All appointments as part of the study are free of charge, including regular blood and urine tests and blood pressure measurement. The study gives cat owners a £50 incentive for the initial screening appointment then, if your cat is accepted onto the study, £20 per visit for the next 14 appointments (some of which are remote) over a 12 month period.

Screening involves your cat being admitted for half a day at the practice with possible sedation as the screening requires kidney ultrasound. The rest of the study visits are all regular appointments or telephone calls.

You can book your cat in for a screening appointment if they meet the following criteria:
🐾 IRIS stage II or III CKD
🐾 Not currently taking NSAIDs (Meloxidyl, Metacam, Onsior) or steroids (prednisone, dexamethasone)
🐾 Does not have diabetes, cancer or heart failure
🐾 If hyperthyroid, stable on medication for at least 6 months
🐾 If they have other medical conditions, stable for at least 4 weeks
🐾 On the same diet for at least 4 weeks
🐾 Tolerant of vet visits and blood sampling
🐾 Able to take a small tablet twice daily (not crushed) which may either be the study medication or a placebo

If you are interested in having your cat screened for the study, please contact us via WhatsApp or email to discuss their suitability with our vets.

We are happy to accept new patients from other practices as long as they are within our catchment area, or referred by another practice within a 1hr radius.

🎉 ONE YEAR OF MCR VETS 🎉

One year ago today, we opened our doors with a simple mission: to provide compassionate, honest and exceptional care for the pets and people in our community.

Since then, we have had the privilege of meeting so many incredible pets (and their humans!) and becoming a part of your journey, from first vaccinations and routine check-ups, to surgeries, recoveries and everything in between.

As an independent practice, our goal has always been to build something truly personal, a place where pets are treated like family and where you can build a relationship with the people who are caring for them.

To our amazing clients and patients, thank you so much for trusting us with your pets and supporting us through our first year. Your kind words, recommendations and wagging tails mean the world to us.

And to our brilliant team, we couldn’t do it without you!

Here’s to another amazing year and many more paws ahead 🐾

💚 MCR Vets.
