Puppy classes weren't the right fit for me and my dog Ernie when he was a puppy. We found them overwhelming, and Ernie found them stressful. He learned so much better at home. It was also hard having to commit to the same time each week, and travel time was extra time on top.

As soon as I had brought Ernie home, I found that I needed guidance to help me to navigate having a new puppy sharing my home and my life (and my heart). I didnโ€™t want to wait.๐Ÿ’™ ๐Ÿพ

Now as an accredited dog trainer, dog guardian and with my own personal experiences in mind, I have created 1-1 online puppy training that you and your puppy can start from the first week your puppy comes home. This is all from comfort of your own home, so there's no need for vaccinations and at times and days that suit you each week, and you can be in your P.Jโ€™s if you like!
๐Ÿ’ป ๐Ÿก

Ernie was very well socialised inside and outside the house despite the puppy classes we attended. Now 8 years on Ernie is a very well-rounded boy who takes the world in his stride and loves life! ๐Ÿ’™ ๐Ÿพ

I have designed 7 sessions dedicated to helping you navigate the early weeks of puppyhood. The sessions are spread out to give you as much chance as possible to practice what youโ€™ve learnt - this is something I would have found more beneficial when Ernie did his puppy training classes as it would helped me be able to fit it in with other aspects of my life. You still cover everything you need, but itโ€™s at a more manageable pace.

The sessions cover all the training basics for you and your puppy so that you have the foundations and tools that they need to be a well-mannered, engaged, socialised dog. It also focuses on building that extra special bond between you and your puppy โ€ฆ providing you do the training, of course ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

Weโ€™ve all heard the phrase "pack leader," and someone say, "that dog's trying to be dominant" or "that dog's trying to dominate you" but these are based on a fundamental misunderstanding of animal behaviour and a debunked theory!

Discover the true origins of the "Alpha" myth, why the scientist who popularised it recanted, and how dog and wolf social structures differ completely โฌ‡๏ธ

๐Ÿบ FACT: The "Alpha" wolf originates from flawed captive studies.

The dominance theory was born in the mid-20th century. Its evidence came from forcing up to 10 unrelated, captive wolves to live together in a tiny, enclosed space (10x20 metres). Because they were strangers trapped together, they violently fought for resources and established a forced hierarchy. Similar behaviour to what happens in prisons.

Modern biologists now know that wild wolf packs are simply nuclear family units (parents and their offspring), where parents lead through natural care and guidance, not through fighting for "alpha" status.

๐Ÿ“™ Source: International Wolf Centre / Dr. L. David Mech

๐Ÿ“… Date: 1999 (Initial paper debunking "alpha status")

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ FACT: The scientist who popularised the concept formally recanted it.

Dr. L. David Mech, the actual biologist most responsible for popularising the alpha concept in 1970, officially recanted it decades later.
He explained that applying the term "alpha" to natural wolf packs (which are simply family units where the "alphas" are just the parents)is like calling human parents the "alphas" of their human families.

Morning Rituals ๐ŸŒ… ๐Ÿพ

There's nothing quite like starting the day at the top of the hills, watching the sunrise with my dog and adventure buddy, Ernie. ๐Ÿ’™ ๐Ÿพ

While it is fantastic physical exercise, it is the mental health benefits that I cherish too.

Science consistently shows that spending time outdoors with our dogs lowers cortisol levels, boosts endorphins, and provides a much-needed moment of reflection before the busy workday begins.

Beyond just keeping us active, these quiet morning walks help build a deeper, trust-based bond between us and our canine companions. It is just the two of us, with the whole world quiet below.

As a science-driven accredited dog trainer, I know that enrichment and shared experiences are the foundation of a great relationship with our dogs.

What is your absolute favorite activity to do with your dog?

Let me know in the comments! ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿผ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿง  The Neuroscience of a Happy Dog: Why Positive Reinforcement Actually Works

Ever wonder what is actually happening in your dog's brain when you give them a treat during training? The science is clear: reward-based training doesn't just teach good manners; it physically rewires their brain for trust, resilience, and faster learning.

Here is what the research tells us:

Fact: The Brain on Treats: A Neurochemical Surge ๐Ÿง  ๐Ÿพ

The Finding: When a dog is rewarded during positive reinforcement, their brain releases a surge of dopamine and oxytocin, strongly activating the caudate nucleus. This physically strengthens neural pathways associated with good behaviour, increases memory retention, and creates a highly secure, trusting, and positive emotional state.

The Source: This neurological finding was established by canine neuroscientist Dr. Gregory Berns using fMRI brain scans of awake, unrestrained dogs, with the foundational research published in the peer-reviewed journal PLOS ONE in May 2012.

Fact: Faster Learning & Stronger Bonding ๐Ÿซด๐Ÿผ๐Ÿพ

The Finding: Dogs trained with positive reinforcement are quicker to learn new tasks, exhibit better obedience, and pay closer attention to their guardians. Furthermore, reward-based methods help dogs develop a secure emotional attachment to their owners, making them more resilient and collaborative.

The Source: Backed by research published by Rooney & Cowan in ScienceDirect Applied Animal Behaviour Science in July 2011 and supported by behavioural tracking in Frontiers in Veterinary Science in September 2021.

Fact: Measurably Lower Stress & Anxiety ๐Ÿง˜๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ ๐Ÿพ

The Finding: Dogs trained using reward-based methods exhibit significantly fewer stress-related behaviours (such as lip-licking, yawning, and lowered posture) and lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol compared to those trained with aversive or punishment-based methods.

Fact Friday: Puppy Edition ๐ŸคŽ๐Ÿพ

Fact
Puppy classes are for "everywhere", not just "rveryone"
The core philosophy for puppy class has evolved!
Rather than focusing on a puppy meeting every single person and dog (which can overwhelm them), expert trainers prioritise getting them comfortable and neutral in all kinds of environments.

Source: Sit Means Sit (Puppy Socialization Class Methodologies)
Date: April 2026

Fact
The repetition framework for new tricks
It takes an average of 20 - 50 repetitions for a puppy to learn the absolute basics of a behaviour in a quiet, distraction-free space. However, achieving real-world reliability (doing it across different environments) can require up to 500+ repetitions because dogs do not naturally generalise concepts automatically.

Date: December 2025

Fact
Neuroscience
Every repetition physically deepens neural pathways.
Just like rain carving a canyon, each time your puppy practices a "sit" or "stay", their synaptic connections strengthen and wrap in myelin, making signals in their brain faster and more automatic.

The why & how ๐Ÿฉท๐Ÿพ

Puppy classes weren't the right fit for me and my dog Ernie when he was a puppy. Being somewhere unfamiliar with other puppies and people in an echoing hall was hard for both of us. It was quite overwhelming.

It was also hard having to commit to the same time each week, at a weekend or evening. The travel time added to the commitment of the classes, which wasnโ€™t ideal either.

I found that as soon as I had brought Ernie home, I wanted to get professional training and needed guidance from puppy classes to help me to navigate having a new puppy sharing my home and my life (and my heart). I didnโ€™t want to wait.๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿพ

Now, as a dog guardian, accredited online dog trainer, with my own personal experiences in mind, I have created 1-1 online puppy classes that you and your puppy can attend from the first week your puppy comes home, all from comfort of your own home, at times and days that suit you each week. ๐Ÿ’ป ๐Ÿก

Being in your own home means that your puppy doesnโ€™t require vaccinations to do the training, that's why you can start the first week that you bring them home, and you can be in your P. Jโ€™s if you like!
๐ŸŒ‘ โ˜€๏ธ

I have learnt and know that for a puppy to become well socialised, they donโ€™t just need to attend puppy classes with other puppies, which seems to be a popular misconception! Socialisation is SO much more! I'm here to guide you through ways to socialise your puppy in a fun, safe, and controlled way that is easy for you and your puppy to do. ๐Ÿถ

I have designed the classes to run over 7 weeks not 6, spreading it out more because back then, as a puppy parent, I was committed to doing puppy training at home in between classes, but I found that I struggled to do the amount required each week. This way, you cover everything, just a bit less each week.

The 7 online classes cover all the puppy training basics for you and your puppy, so they have the foundations that they need to be a well-mannered, socialised dog that listens, is engaged and that you have built an incredible bond with- providing you do the training, of course.

Unconditional Love : The Silent Support System We All Need ๐Ÿพ

Sometimes the best therapy has four legs and and a wagging tail.

It's Mental Health Awareness Week, and I wanted to highlight just how incredible the human-dog bond can be and the profound impact that our furry four pawed best friends can be for our mental health.

My dog Ernie has been the silent support system I didn't even know I needed and for that, I will be forever grateful to him ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿพ

Fun fact Friday

Dogs "eavesdrop" and learn words from our conversations. ๐Ÿคฏ

Your secrets aren't safe!

Stop the press!!

It was previously believed that dogs only learned words through direct training e.g. you are looking at them and saying "ball".

A study published on January 15, 2026, found that "gifted" dogs can learn new object labels simply by listening to conversations between humans - even when the words are not addressed to them! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

The Science: Researchers from Eรถtvรถs Lorรกnd University (ELTE) and the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna discovered that dogs map new words to objects through passive listening, similar to how human children acquire language.
