Here at Best Friends, we pride ourselves on our nurse utilisation. Our nursing team offer a wide range of consultations focusing on preventative care, routine procedures, and pet education.

These consultations cover a wide range of non-emergency, routine services and generally include:

🐾Preventative Health: Weight management and nutrition counseling, flea and worming advice, and microchipping.
🐾Routine Procedures: Nail clipping, a**l gland expression, health checks and second vaccinations.
🐾Post-Operative Care: Wound checks, bandage changes, and stitch removal.
🐾Life-Stage & Chronic Support: Puppy/kitten socialization, senior pet health checks, and ongoing monitoring of long-term conditions (like arthritis injections).
🐾Medication Assistance: Demonstrations or administration of tablets, topical treatments, and injections.

Our nurses are nightly skilled and knowledgeable professionals who can triage injured pets in emergency situations. They can assess your pets general health and alert the vet to any concerns / abnormalities they may find.

Our Veterinary Nurses are the ones who care for your best friend when they are in the hospital. They make sure to keep them warm, comfortable and happy. Our nursing team are highly trained in understanding the body language of your best friends, which helps ensure steps are taken to keep them as stress-free as possible.

Our nurses feed, water, take out dogs for toilet breaks, clean wounds, and provide a safe space for your best friend whilst in unfamiliar and uncomfortable surroundings. Our wonderful nurses provide emotional support as well as medical support to your best friend. They are always in safe hands with our nurses caring for them 🐾

Veterinary Nurses are also Dentists 🦷

Our veterinary nurses are usually the ones who scale and polish your best friend's teeth. They create dental charts and make notes of any missing or broken teeth.
If teeth are identified as needing to be extracted, the veterinary surgeon will come over and perform the extraction.

‼️HEAT WAVE WARNING‼️

PLEASE be responsible pet pawrents this weekend and keep your pets safe from heatstroke.

☀️Avoid walking in the middle of the day - stick to early morning or late evening
☀️Avoid excessive exercise - if your dog loves to play fetch… not a good idea in hot weather
☀️Hot cars KILL pets in these temperatures.. it only takes a couple of minutes so please be mindful if taking car journeys
☀️Ensure lots of shady spots are available in gardens
☀️Please keep fresh cold water available at all times
☀️Avoid letting your best friend sunbathe in direct sunlight by the window or patio doors
☀️Ice cubes are great in this weather - freezing some yoghurt or other freeze able treats like bone broth makes a great icy snack to help keep cool

Be sensible and have a lovely bank holiday weekend 🐾

‼️ If your best friend is experiencing any of the symptoms of heat stoke- COOL THEM IMMEDIATELY and then seek veterinary attention. It is vital that the first step be to reduce their temperature, you can use cold water, fans and ice packs wrapped in towels to help cool over heating pets. It is a myth that cooling them too fast causes shock! Please follow the guidelines set out by the RCVS in the link below ‼️

Our nursing team is in charge of maintaining stock levels, running the social media, updating the displays in the waiting area, ordering medications, checking discard dates, record keeping of controlled drugs, paperwork, and so much more!

Here we have Alex conducting the painstaking task of a stock-take. This meant every single thing in the building needed to be counted and checked off against digital records. This is done for accounting purposes to ensure the stock we have in the building matches what the computer system says we should have.
