Today is Back British Farming Day and this year is the 10th anniversary - an annual event celebrating the food and farming sector. And an opportunity to show support for our farmers and growers, and the work they do 365 days a year to feed the nation and care for our iconic countryside.

All of us at The George Farm Vets are proud to support our British farmers today , tomorrow and in the future so let’s get behind them all not just on Back British Farming Day but every day.

Some fun facts for today!
🧀More than 700 different types of cheese are produced in the UK.
🥚On average, we eat 192 eggs per person, per year. That's enough to make 1,152 fairy cakes!
🚜Famers manage 71% of the nation's landscapes.
🍞In 2023, British farmers produced enough milling wheat to make 6.5 billion loaves of bread.
🌿The UK produces 2 billion portions of frozen peas each year. and, most make it through to the factory and through the freezing process in under 2.5 hours.

This week is Love Lamb Week - the perfect opportunity to share information on lamb production and to encourage consumption of lamb during its peak season. Plus share content to help improve the understanding of sheep farming amongst UK consumers.

As sheep farmer Rosie Bloor a face of Love Lamb Week said” I'm passionate about British farming and helping the public to make the link from farm to what ends up on their plate. I believe it is so important to educate everyone on where their food comes from, dispel the many myths that are flying around these days about farming and help drive home the message that British lamb is a healthy, sustainable, affordable and delicious choice for everyone.”

Last week Hannah and Ellie were called to a less than straightforward calving. The cow had a very twisted uterus, which they managed to untwist using 'Gyn-stick'.

Unfortunately because of the uterus being twisted the calf hadn't engaged in the pelvis like a normal calving to induce relaxation and opening of the cervix. It is common with twisted uterus presentations that cows don't show much signs of calving because the calf doesn't engage in the pelvis to trigger all the normal hormonal changes and then the physical changes for giving birth i.e. dilation of the cervix.

By then understandably the cow wanted to lie down, so it was a down caesarean which proved to be a tricky one but pleased to say that cow and calf are both doing really well one week on post surgery. Both were star patients!
