Laminitis is to be managed by veterinarians and the horses owner however as massages therapists we can play a key role in supporting the horse with compensatory stress and tension.

We can work closely with the veterinary team to support in relieving muscle tension, restoring balance and promoting relaxation.

✨Carrot stretch between front legs✨

How to perform stretch:

- Use a carrot to encourage the horse to bring their head down and between their front legs
- Make sure you keep the carrot close to the horses lips to avoid the horse bouncing you want it to ideally be a smooth movement.
- Hold the stretch for 5-10 seconds and then allow the horse to take the carrot
- Repeat the stretch 2-3 times per session and increase the stretch gradually

This stretch needs to be carried out on warm muscles. A good time to perform the stretch would be after ridden work.

Horses may try to cheat by bending their front leg to allow them to reach the carrot. You want them to have both front hooves flat to the floor to get maximum benefit from the stretch.

“Just a massage therapist.”
Those words get thrown around far too lightly.

I promise there’s nothing “just” about what we do. Every session is built on solid foundations, anatomy, biomechanics, pathology, and a deep understanding of how pain, compensation, workload, and management all link together. Massage therapy is good solid training, ongoing CPD, educated hands that can feel what’s changing in the body, and the professional judgement to know when treatment is appropriate, and sometimes more importantly when it isn’t.

It’s more about spotting the quiet signs before they become loud problems. Working alongside vets, farriers, and trainers as part of a wider rehabilitation or performance plan. We are helping horses stay comfortable, move better, and cope with the demands placed on them, whether that’s elite sport or everyday life.

Massage therapy isn’t a luxury. It isn’t guesswork, and it definitely isn’t something you can dismiss with the word “just.” So next time you hear that phrase, pause for a minute. Because behind it sits skill, science, experience, and accountability.

👀 And there is absolutely nothing “just” about that.
