Why does my dog get anxious going to the grooming parlour? Is a question I hear many pet parents ask.

Dogs are not born loving the process of grooming. It can be a noisy and overwhelming experience.

Here are a few things we as owners can do to help our dogs adjust.

● Get your dog used to the tools we use, such as brushes and a hairdryer.

● Many dogs struggle with groomers touching areas they are not used to. Spend time at home gently touching the ears, paws, and tail. Rewarding with a treat when they react positively.

● Keep your dog social. Meeting and mixing with other dogs and people regularly, will help your dog to build a relationship with their groomer, and not be phased by other dogs in the parlour. It also encourages independence, allowing your dog to feel confident when apart from you.

● Bathing can be a trigger for some dogs. Getting them used to water at home can help greatly. Spraying them lightly with a hose, short shallow baths and water play can be positive experiences they can take with them to the grooming parlour.

● On the day of your pooches appointment make sure that your dog has been adequately excercised. This will help to burn off excess energy and produce feel good endorphins.

● Be positive! If you're nervous when bringing your dog into the parlour, chances are, they will feed off this and become anxious themselves.
